    Research Associate – Agronomist and Nursery Data Analyst Consultant

    The Position: The Research Associate will be expected to support in leading field activities with partners to support potato seed system development and potato production. Focus areas include apical cuttings and new varieties of potato, and technically backstopping nurseries and seed business producing and using apical cuttings, respectively. The Research Associate is to have expertise in potato agronomy, seed production and nursery management to produce apical cuttings. Maintaining partnerships in all activities is key applying to all responsibilities.

    This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya and report to the Senior Scientist.

    Key responsibilities:

    Coordinate field activities for potato seed system development with focus on apical cuttings and new varieties
    Conduct capacity building interventions for seed multipliers, farmers, partners, private sector enterprises;
    Coordinate and support planning and delivery of field days and training sites managed by partners.
    Provide technical backstopping to nursery operators producing apical cuttings and seed producers producing seed from cuttings
    Work with partner to coordinate and monitor activities, such as extension training of trainers followed by farmer training, and monitor collection of all event and field data.
    Produce progress report of the field activities including maintaining database of monitoring data and managing and analyzing technical and economic data.

    Requirements

    Minimum MSc degree in Agronomy, Agribusiness, Agricultural Development, or a related field;
    At least six years’ experience in agriculture in general of which 3 years working with potato, of which at least 2 years with differing classes of seed potato.
    Excellent skills in managing partnerships with senior level officials to farmers
    Excellent knowledge and experience in supporting nurseries to produce apical cuttings of potato
    Excellent knowledge and experience in supporting seed businesses to produce seed potato from apical cuttings
    Excellent skills in coordinating and monitoring large scale agricultural training programs with several partners
    Collecting diverse kinds of data form all activities
    Excellent data analysis, synthesis and report writing skills
    Advanced level of MS Office. 
    Advanced written and oral communication skills in English.
    Fluent in Kiswahili.

    The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a dynamic and experienced Data Entry and Analysis consultant.
    The Position: The Demand-Driven Sweetpotato Breeding Project (DS breeding project), implemented by the Internatinal Potato Center and its partners, conducted qualitative study involving sweetpotato farmers. Data were collected to facilitate understanding the traits farmers value in sweetpotato, how those traits are prioritized and of the reasons behind the selection of priority traits. Data were collected from both men and women producers using laddering technique and involving some 40 farmers. The purpose of this work is to enter the data collected in an appropiate software, analyze them and presents the outputs/results in the desired format.
    Key responsibilities:

    Conduct content analysis of laddering interviews to identify attributes, consequences and values
    Generate laddering codes from the interviews
    Enter qualitative data from 40 interviews into appropriate software, e.g., MecAnalyts or LadderUX
    Carry out analysis of the data and present the results in well formatted form
    Revise the laddering codes and results based on comments from the research coordinator
    Provide soft data

    Selection Criteria

  • Consultancy – Adapting OFSP ToT manual into e-learning

    Consultancy – Adapting OFSP ToT manual into e-learning

    The position: (CIP) is seeking a consultancy firm that can adapt and develop the existing Sweetpotato (SP) Training of Trainers (ToT) manual entitled “Everything You Wanted to Know about Sweetpotato” into a series of self‐guided e‐learning modules. The sweetpotato ToT manual is a compilation of twelve topics on sweetpotato knowledge and accompanying hands-on activities. The course is currently delivered through classroom/workshop and field-based methodologies targeted at technical experts (agriculturalists, nutritionists, marketing, and gender experts). These trainers in turn deliver a shorter version of the course to extension personnel, community-based agents, or lead farmers who finally train the end users in their communities. CIP proposes to adapt this manual into a series of self‐guided e‐learning modules targeted at different levels in this chain and delivered alone or in combination with face-to-face interactions with the goal to reach wider constituencies more cost-effectively.
    The specific objectives of this consultancy include the following:

    Translate the technical content into relevant, engaging e‐learning modules suitable for a diverse audience in CIP’s target countries in Africa and possibly South Asia, and which can also be translated into local languages where applicable.
    Provide an effective and efficient learning experience to participants through both stand-alone e-learning and in combination with face-to-face learning events.
    Create training materials and user interfaces that utilize a range of stimulating formats and technologies, drawing on existing information and knowledge products and complementing these where needed.
    Provide options for CIP’s national and local partners to use this e-learning course for institutional staff development and quality control of technical competencies.
    Provide delivery options for multimedia e‐learning content to audiences in regions with limited or no regular Internet connectivity.

    Scope of Work
    The consultant will adapt the SP manual content into e-learning modules that will include the following components;

    Based on the existing ToT manual content, the consultant will design and develop blended (instructor-led and self-guided) e-learning modules that will include facilitator enablement (ToT), job aids and reference guides for participants.
    The e‐learning modules developed should be relevant, engaging, and suitable for a diverse audience in CIP’s target countries in Africa and possibly South Asia, and which can also be translated into local languages where applicable.
    E-learning modules developed should provide an effective and efficient learning experience to participants through both stand-alone e-learning and in combination with face-to-face learning events.
    Develop e-learning experience that will also provide delivery options for multimedia e‐learning content to audiences in regions with limited or no regular Internet connectivity.
    Use existing CIP videos and where there are gaps develop videos; photos audio, printed and interactive e-learning materials for the course.
    Set up; configure and populate an LMS (Learning Management System) to host and deliver the course content online, track participants progress and run reports.
    Advise CIP on the development of metrics to gauge the success and impact of the course and develop reports in the LMS to help track progress using key metrics.

    Requirements:

    The consultancy team should include members with an advanced degree in education, agriculture & nutrition related courses, biological science, or other related fields.
    At least five years’ strong track record in the development of e-learning courses, training and technical assistance materials and other capacity development products.
    Experience in technical writing for international clients in the field of agriculture and nutrition.
    Adult learning, instructional design and curriculum development competence.
    Excellent communication and writing skills.
    Experience in graphic design tools such as Formatting and software skills e.g. Word, Photoshop and Illustrator.
    Good background knowledge of agriculture and nutrition.

    Time Frame: The consultancy contract will be between May 2020 and December 2020
    The financial proposal should contain:

    The Position: The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic and ambitious Consultant – Senior Research Associate (Agronomist) to contribute to Development and Delivery of Biofortified Crops at Scale (DDBIO) – Kenya project implementation. The Consultant will provide expertise in the design and direct implementation of a cost effective and sustainable sweetpotato seed system for DDBIO in Kenya. He/she will contribute to efforts to ensure and assure affordable, accessible and quality sweetpotato planting material needed to scale up the orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) in Kenya.
    The consultant will work closely with the DDBIO Kenya Team Leader, project implementing partners, and with the CIP country and global teams
    Key responsibilities:

    Contribute to the design and direct the implementation of a sustainable sweetpotato seed systems strategy for DDBIO – Kenya that will assure quality and accessibility of sweetpotato planting material for production and commercialization of the sweetpotato value chain.
    Design and implement a working, cost-effective and timely planting material dissemination approaches and root production plans with partners to enhance OFSP production among households both for food and nutrition security as well as commercialization.
    Work and collaborate with national government partners (KALRO/KEPHIS) and other stakeholders to initiate, coordinate and manage the National Performance Evaluation (NPTs) and varietal release process for developing commercially viable OFSP varieties.
    Participate in the development and, where possible, delivery of appropriate training modules in priority topics such as production, agronomy, post-harvesting management etc. The training will target sweetpotato value chain actors including farmers, extension agents, aggregators, processors etc.
    Provide support for the DDBIO M&E by facilitating timely, accurate and routine data collection required for project reports.
    Provide the technical expertise for private commercial partners and support their agronomist and extension staff to achieve the desired quality and quantity of raw materials for the successful puree processing business.
    Working with other stakeholders and colleagues develop linkages and contribute to online platforms for exchange of information about OFSP for widespread adoption.

    The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a highly talented Monitoring Learning and Evaluation (MLE) on a consultancy basis.**
    Objective of the Position:
    The EU financed CIP agriculture for nutrition project in SNNPR Ethiopia “Quality Diets for Better Health” (QDBH) has collected data for its end-line report in November and December 2019. In 26 kebeles in three woredas 2605 households were interviewed using a slightly adapted version of the standard MLE tool developed by the CIP MLE team in December 2018. The end-line report will allow the measurement of the impact on agricultural, dietary and knowledge indicators in three treatment arms.
    Due to the complexity of the sampling frame, the size of the data set, and the fact that the QDBH team doesn’t have in-house MLE capacity, CIP intends to hire a consultant who can support data cleaning, data analysis and reporting. The consultant will be based in Nairobi but frequently interact with the data entry staff in SNNPR,
    Key responsibilities:
    Preparation and cleaning of the data set

    Data cleaning: checking the data on consistency, missing data, outliers and data entry errors.
    Providing instructions to data entry staff for checking the paper forms as to the identification of mistakes and their correction in the questionnaires.
    Making the appropriate changes in the data file.

    Design analytical frame

    Design and apply the appropriate weighting factors for sub-sample groups in intervention and control kebeles.

    The Position: SweetGAINS is an ambitious three-year project designed to modernize sweetpotato breeding in Africa. SweetGAINS will improve breeding operations and methodologies, ensure integration between breeding outputs and early generation seed availability, and strengthen a joint SpeedBreeders and Seed Community of Practice (CoP) by 2022. Due to the COVID-19 situation – physical meetings and workshops have been stopped. Therefore, we propose to run a virtual training for SweetGAINS colleagues (CIP and partners) on how to prepare and organize virtual meetings and workshops. This training should include review of potential ICT platforms for different types of meetings (together with CIP IT and data management team); on-line meeting process management; maintaining engagement to achieve meeting/workshop outputs.
    Key responsibilities:

    Preparation of virtual training e.g. needs assessment (content, process and ICT platforms), training plan, and sending pre-training tasks and notifications (2 days).

He/she will assist the CIP Nutrition Scientist to coordinate nutrition sensitive agricultural activities around biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato in selected counties and assist in designing, overseeing implementation of nutrition education, communication and behavior change activities in the OFSP value chains.
    Key responsibilities:

    Be the projects contact person with the partners we will be working with to promote nutrition sensitive agriculture and biofortification in Kenya.
