    About the role

    Key Responsibilities:

    What are we looking for?

    MSc/MA in Public Policy analysis, Economics, Development Communication, International Development, or related fields.
    More than 10 years of relevant work experience in an international organization /NGOs or project-based organizations.
    Expertise in evidence-based policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
    Experience working at the intersection of research, policy and practice in LMICs.

    About the role
    The International Potato Center (CIP) through the SweetGAINS project has been working at modernizing sweetpotato breeding programs, by improving excellence in the management of breeding data. The position will support these efforts for Root and Tuber Crops (RTB) in Sub-Saharan African (SSA), Latin America and Asia. Also the MIPPI and EiA Initiatives of the One CGIAR are in demand of similar support.
    Key Responsibilities:

    The data specialist will be part of the data management team overseeing RTB breeding and genetic data management systems.
    Understand existing tools used for data capture and assist in the developing modules that extend the scope for the current tools. 
    Respond to ICT support requests from CIP breeders and partners in a timely manner through WhatsApp/telegram/telephone/field visits. 
    Contribute to writing standard operating procedures for RTB breeding data management.
    Lead capacity building efforts among project collaborators and partners in data collection, storage, documentation and management. Act as lecturer in these     trainings.
     Implement and monitor Quality Assurance (QA) protocols and routines, including safe and remote back-up of database systems and tools.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Perform donor financial eligibility checks, prepare budgets and other corresponding document for donor’s proposals, and financial clearance of new agreements, as part of the Pre-Award cycle.
    Ensure that all donor related information is disseminated to project and, therefore, abide by donor rules and regulations.
    Monitor compliance in the projects, including project audit reports, general financial and contracts issues related to projects and provide support when required.
    Prepare and submit timely and accurate donor reports (W1&W2, W3 and Bilateral Funding) requesting the necessary invoices. Stay current with donor regulations and the award requirements identified in the CIP compliance matrix, to prepare accurate and timely reports.

    General:

    Assist in conducting risk assessments as needed for current or prospective CIP office locations and project work areas. Provide timely and thorough reports to management regarding particular safety concerns.
    Participate in Internal Safety and Security Committee at ILRI Campus and stay informed of industry best practices, trends and discussions regarding occupational health, safety, and security. Help ensure that CIP is in compliance with relevant laws, regulations and current best practices related to health, safety and security.
    Understand insurance coverage that is in place, work with the Country Mangers and Human Resource Managers to ensure that staff are aware of their coverage and how to use it in an emergency. Work with Country Managers to have designated persons and procedures in place to respond in case of need.
    Work closely with the CIP Global Risk, Security and Safety Manager and Africa and Asia Regional Manager to identify any areas of concern and/or evaluate health and safety conditions at existing or potential future CIP project sites.
    Respond to inquiries from staff regarding CIP’s occupational health, safety, and security policies, protocols and resources.

    Coordinate/execute/monitor course of action (COA) in response to crises, events, or incidents:

    Help coordinate Africa and Asia Incident Response including communications to ensure that CIP’s response is effective and consistent.
    Ensure key staff are informed and aware of incidents and any high risk activities that are being undertaken in CIP’s Africa and Asia offices.
    Conduct investigations and participate in after-action reviews to identify opportunities for training/improvement of CIP practices.
    Be available for after-hours incidents.
    Monitor Africa and Asia events regarding health, safety and security that may impact CIP operations and staff. Support Africa and Asia Country Managers and Security Focal Points to do so.
    Keep the Global RSS Manager informed of alerts and announcements of Africa and Asia events, including how our operations or participants are being affected and any relevant response by CIP or host organizations.

    Support on agrobacterium genetic transformation and selection on appropriate media.
    Molecular characterization of transgenic events by PCR, RTq-PCR, Southern blot, sequencing, and bioinformatics.
    Support on isolation and maintenance of potato pathogens.
    Perform bio-assays using artificial infection of potato plants with local strains in the biosafety glasshouse and other biosafety approved facilities.
    Ensure plant care in the growth chambers, screen house and glasshouse.

    Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry or Plant Pathology with strong skills in Molecular Biology.

     The position is Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position limited to Kenya nationals and permanent residents only. The employment contract will be for one (01) year (with a 3-month probation period) possibility of renewal, subject to availability of funding.
