    Job description
    The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality and policy-relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.
    The Center seeks to recruit a Development Officer who will be part of the development unit that is responsible for providing leadership in resource mobilization and grant management for the Center’s growing portfolio of projects.
    The successful candidate will support the Center’s fundraising efforts through identification and participation in developing competitive proposals in response to funding opportunities. Additionally, s/he will be responsible for coordinating all community engagement activities in support of the Center’s research, policy engagement and research capacity strengthening programs.
    Duties/Responsibilities:

    Support the implementation of the fundraising strategy and budget for resource mobilization activities;
    Mobilize resources from local and international sources to support defined community development activities;
    Maintain an up-to-date database of potential funding opportunities and keep track of all fundraising efforts;
    Manage regular communication and follow-ups with current and potential funders;
    Participate in preparation of timely narrative and financial reports to funders and partners as required;
    Develop and manage APHRC’s partnerships with relevant Government departments, NGOs, community-based organizations and other relevant stakeholders as they relate to communities where we work;
    Participate in development of partnership agreements and ensure compliance at all times;
    Facilitate effective operation of the various Community Advisory Groups (CAG);
    Facilitate community entry for new research projects by liaising with and explaining specific APHRC projects to community leaders, community members, governmental bodies and other groups as needed;
    Act as interface between the technical operation of research projects and participating community members;
    Produce briefings, reports and presentations on community mobilization activities and key community events;
    Perform essential administrative tasks, including planning, attending and coordinating community meetings and events; producing minutes of CAG meetings;
    Oversee APHRC’s long-term corporate social responsibility programs in the communities;
    Oversee the development and management of the budget for community activities; and
    Support capacity building of CBOs to be able to implement projects.

    Qualifications, experience and skills:

    Master’s degree in Social Sciences or any relevant field
    Professional qualification in project management or community development
    At least 5 years’ experience of relevant demonstrated experience in international development, with three years in direct resource mobilization work;
    Knowledge of various donor requirements and demonstrated experience working with one or more of the following categories of funders; bilateral, multilateral,
    Corporations, US Foundations and various Government agencies;
    Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work with diverse teams;
    Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Kiswahili;
    Experience working with marginalized communities will be an added advantage.

    Job Details
    The DQA will be implemented on one side, at an IP’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) unit and intermediate reporting levels using a routine data quality assessment tool, and, on another side at the field level (beneficiary households) using a Community Trace and Verify tool. APHRC will work in close coordination with Palladium team to implement the DQA.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Applicants should meet the following requirements.

    Should have completed at least secondary education with a minimum of grade C+ (Plus) in KCSE.
    Be familiar with and proficient in computer applications including use of MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
    Have proven experience in conducting household surveys.
    Knowledgeable in both quantitative and/or qualitative data collection.
    Has an appreciation for quality data in a survey context.
    Experience in electronic data collection.
    Be a current resident of / originates from any of the following counties: Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kilifi, Kajiado, Laikipia, Meru, Mombasa, Nakuru and Uasin Gishu.
    Be fluent in English, Kiswahili and any other local language mostly spoken in any of the project counties.

    Job Description (responsibilities):

    Conducting desk review of secondary data previously collected for and maintained by the various OVC Projects and Local Implementing Partners (LIPs).
    Identifying study participants as defined in the study.
    Consenting study participants.
    Conducting face-to-face interviews with participants sampled for the study.
    Complete, edit and submit all assigned interviews for cross-checking and verification by the Supervisor;
    Documenting any data inconsistencies detected from the secondary data as well as from the verification interviews.
    Reviewing all completed data quality assessment interviews for completeness and internal consistency.
    Electronically transmitting all complete and approved quality assessment interviews
    Ensuring that all sampled study participants assigned to him/her are fully accounted for as at close of data collection.
    Reporting all project related issues to the Supervisor for quick and effective troubleshooting.
    Ensuring safety of survey tools and equipment as may be assigned.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Masters in any of the following areas: Public Health, Epidemiology, Sociology, Biological Sciences, Applied Statistics, Development Studies or related disciplines
    At least two years’ post-Masters qualification experience, preferably in a research setting
    Good computer literacy and knowledge of multiple statistical and/or qualitative software packages such as STATA, SPSS, NVivo or ATLAS.ti
    Experience conducting field research and managing data collection teams
    Excellent oral and written communication in English and Kiswahili
    Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines

    Lead in setting direction and coordinating activities to set up a health systems training hub for health workers and practitioners working in FCAS
    Undertake a scoping exercise to identify players and actors and learning needs

    Key Responsibilities

    Prepare and document program requirements, specifications and data dictionaries for various databases
    Consistently create and maintain software programs and applications according to specifications
    Assist in the development and maintenance of user manuals and guidelines
    Train Field Interviewer(s) or Data Entry staff in the use of data collection applications
    Design and implement data quality algorithms to check data quality and to monitor data in the early stages of data collection
    Liaise with Data Analysts and other Software Developers to resolve problems with software products or data issues
