    Duties/Responsibilities

    APHRC seeks a Multimedia and Communications Intern to join its Visibility Unit — the team responsible for corporate communications at the Center. Under the mentorship of the Visibility Unit manager, the successful candidate will support the enhancement of the organization’s visual identity through the development of innovative multimedia assets for our website, social media platforms and print products.
    Responsibilities:

    Support production of video content for the website and social media platforms (pre-production, recording, and editing);
    Designing posters, flyers and infographics;
    Updating content on APHRC’s website;
    Manage digital archive and maintain an organized file-management system of images and video clips; and
    Assist with production of weekly e-newsletter.

    Qualifications and competencies:

    At an advanced stage of their degree program in Communications, Journalism, Film Production, Public Relations or any other related field. Diploma level candidates will also be considered.
    Strong proficiency in the Adobe Suite (particularly Premiere Pro, InDesign/ illustrator) or an equivalent.

    Additional information:

    APHRC seeks to recruit a Grant Accountant- Fund Management to manage the Center’s fund management projects and coordinate the administrative duties in the office of the Director leading the fund management work.
    Duties/Responsibilities:

    Provide support to project staff by ensuring cost effective utilization of resources;
    Monitor project expenditure to ensure they are in line with donors’ agreements and prepare donor financial reports;
    Monitor projects expenditure against the budgets and provide frequent feedback to the project managers and project staff on budget matters;
    Review field imprest / staff travel advance to ensure adherence to set procedures;
    Review partner institutions’ expenditure accounting and prepare funds disbursements;
    Participate in proposal development preparing budgets and other administrative sections;
    Prepare for project audits by continuously reviewing accounts for accuracy and provide support to auditors during project financial audits;
    Process payments and funds transfer;
    Ensure proper records management and compliance with internal and external requirements;
    Maintain grant reporting requirements and schedules in the Project Management System (PMS) and follow-up on project reports to ensure submission by due dates;
    Help in monitoring project implementation including review of burn rates both for the Center and project partners;
    Review financial information from across the Center tracking variables of interest for the Director’s management information;
    Manage the Director’s office and respond to queries in their absence;
    Schedule appointments for the Director as necessary;
    Manage meetings of the Director’s office, including preparing documentation and taking minutes as necessary; and
    Identify action points during meetings and follow up with the concerned parties to ensure accomplishment.

    Qualifications, experience and skills:

    Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field.
    Must be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA K) or Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) equivalent.
    At least 3 years’ post qualification experience preferably in an international NGO.
    Excellent skills in MS Excel and familiarity with accounting software, preferably Navision (MS Dynamics).
    Willingness to extend beyond finance to the area of administration.
    Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to follow assignments through to completion.

    Introduction: The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research.

    APHRC invites applications on consultancy to conduct public speaking training to a group of APHRC staff.
    The purpose of the training is to equip a group of APHRC staff with public speaking skills to enhance their capacity to effectively deliver ideas as they engage with different stakeholders (partners, donors, policy makers, conference participants, colleagues) in diverse settings.
    The training is intended to take four days, of 3-4 hours each.
    Scope of Work

    Design and develop a 4-day (3-4 hours per day) training programme for APHRC staff with relevant modules including:

    Key issues to consider when preparing to speak in public;
    Tips for public speaking
    Delivering a dynamic and effective presentation

    Deliver training to the staff of the APHRC in English
    Provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills necessary for effective engagement in a multicultural environment through public speaking
    Provide necessary training materials
    Provide group and one-on-one feedback to participants on ways to improve public speaking.
    Evaluate and submit both pre-training and post-training reports after the completion of the training program.

    Qualifications & Experience

    Advanced university degree in Communication Studies, Media Studies, Social Science, or relevant field of study.
    At least 5 years’ experience of handling similar assignments.
    Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
    Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills.

    The consultant will work alongside an in-house web development team to design, develop and implement an interactive web based annual report.
    The consultant will work under the overall guidance of the Visibility Unit, within the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) Division.
    Scope of Work:

    To achieve the objective of the assignment, the Front-End Designer/Developer will carry out the following tasks;
    Provide creative and innovative ideas for UI-UX design, development and implementation of the digital annual report.
    Design to development; generate concepts and create wireframes and prototypes for UI-UX design and general outlook of the digital annual report based on content provided; will include an easy to navigate design while utilizing easy to process scripts to minimize page load speeds.
    Make use of HTML/CSS/JS to develop/code interactive visuals/interfaces and make a digital report that is visually and aesthetically pleasing to users while ensuring minimal load times for different pages and interfaces.
    Design and edit artwork, photos, charts, and other graphical elements; in electronic format, adaptable for use on the digital annual report.
    Create different illustrative materials such as animations, infographics, icons and illustrations etc. that will be used in design and development of the digital annual report.
    Ensure consistency of branding and messaging across the digital report design and all the integrated visuals.
    Receive, review and incorporate all feedback from the internal annual report development team.
    Integrate google analytics to track user behavior on the digital annual report.

    Expertise and experience:

    A Design-Developer, with extensive hands on experience in using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to create interactive animated user interfaces and experiences i.e. use of anime.js, animate.js, JQuerry.js etc.
    Extensive experience in design disciplines and processes such as client server solution architecture, MVC Models, OOP or High performance solutions preferably using PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax and preprocessors like SASS and LESS.
    Experience using collaborative software tools such as SVN, GIT, CVS and Mercurial for version control purposes.
    Strong skills in wireframing and prototyping to bring out key functionalities before building the digital report design.
    Understanding of UX writing will be an added advantage.

    APHRC invites applications for a Consultant Demographer to lead the re-design of its Nairobi Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System (NUHDSS) project for a 6 month engagement. 
    The successful candidate will lead the re-design of the NUHDSS project to ensure that the NUHDSS achieves its primary purpose while mitigating the aforementioned challenges and considering the all or some of the following key questions that have arisen regarding improving the utility of the NUHDSS. These key questions include, but are not limited to:

    How should the re-designed NUHDSS position itself in order to generate evidence that is relevant to the national and regional policy processes and that is cognizant of existing intra-slum and intra-urban inequities?
    How should the re-designed NUHDSS be implemented in order to have impact both at the local level and on a wider intra urban scale?
    Which approach would enable the re-designed NUHDSS to achieve its goals: a whole population surveillance or a thematic, sub-population surveillance?
    How can lessons learned from previous membership in HDSS networks be addressed in the re-designed NUHDSS? Such lessons include: few or no Principal Investigators in HDSSs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), limited engagement with the East African society, low productivity in terms of scientific outputs and a lack of a community of practice in HDSS science.
    How can the re-designed NUHDSS use advancements in technology to inform methodology for evidence generation and dissemination, e.g. data science methodologies, real-time capture of vital-statistics indicators, and linkages between HDSS data and health facility (hospital) data?
    Should the re-designed NUHDSS exclude or include surveillance data pertaining to a) various forms of exposure to health risks; b) access to and use of health services; c) access to and use of other social amenities; and/or d) on health and other social outcomes?
    Should the re-designed NUHDSS limit its scope to selected socially vulnerable groups such as, children, women, adolescents, the elderly?
    Should the re-designed NUHDSS have a special focus on an environment and health agenda that includes, low toilet ownership, contaminated drinking water, solid waste management, and, indoor and outdoor air pollution, among others?
    How can the re-designed NUHDSS incorporate safety measures to protect data collection teams as well as the respondents in the face of highly infectious outbreaks such as the Covid-19 pandemic?

    The Consultant Roles and responsibilities
    The anticipated roles and responsibilities may include but not limited to:

    Lead, supervise and carry out the work pertaining to the benchmarking that informs the re-design
    Lead, supervise and participate in the development two to three topical issues (and related indicators) in the urban space that highlight existing intra-slum and intra-urban inequities in Nairobi City in order to be relevant to the national and regional policy processes
    Lead, supervise and participate in the development of a new NUHDSS protocol project that addresses the challenges listed above for submission to desired institutional ethical approvals
    Advise on mobilization of resources for the NUHDSS project to ensure its financial sustainability.

    Qualifications

    PhD Degree in Demography, Population Studies, Public Health or Statistics with an emphasis on Demography
    Minimum 7 years of professional experience in the implementation and management of HDSS or related longitudinal population studies
    Knowledge of methods of demographic analyses and theories that pertain to urbanization, urban demographic change and/or urban population trends
    Experience in developing protocols
    Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills
    Strong organizational and program management skills
    Ability to take initiative and work both independently and in teams.

    Background
    The Center’s current Strategic Plan (2017-2021) is soon coming to an end. A new plan therefore needs to be developed for approval by the Board in November 2021 to become operational in January 2022. APHRC requires an experienced and competent consultant or consulting firm to lead a facilitated and consultative process to develop the new Strategic Plan for the period 2022-2026.
    Objectives
    The objective of this consultancy is to propose a suitable and sequential design process and facilitate a strategic planning process that is inclusive, iterative and solicits and integrates input from key stakeholders.
    Specific tasks and deliverables will include:

    Design a process for developing the strategic plan.
    Facilitate planned retreats/virtual meetings with key stakeholders including all staff, senior management and Board members.
    Document and synthesize the retreat and meeting outcomes.
    Propose a suitable overarching framework for the Strategic Plan.
    Produce a draft Strategic Plan and supportive documents capturing key elements for the subsequent operational plan, resource mobilization strategy and organizational management structure.
    Make up to three presentations to the Board and senior management.

    Timeframe
    The contract will commence the last week of February 2021 and conclude by November 30 2021. **
    Responsibilities of APHRC

    Provide relevant background documents.
    Liaise and assist in communicating with and mobilizing key stakeholders.
    Handle all logistical arrangements for retreats/ virtual meetings.

    The CPSE program aims to act as a critical and neutral knowledge partner to the constellation of actors working towards the full domestication and implementation of continental commitments on sexual and reproductive health and the rights of Africa’s young people and women. As a knowledge partner, CPSE will work to support these actors in developing and deploying effective, evidence-based advocacy, specifically on three focal SRHR issues:

    The sexual and reproductive health and the rights of adolescents.
    Access to safe abortion and post-abortion care.
    The discrimination of marginalized sexual and gender minority groups.

     Project approach 
    CPSE’s work is anchored on partnerships with key government and civil society bodies at the regional and sub-regional levels in Eastern, Southern and Western Africa in seven countries: Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, and Liberia. Across these geographies, CPSE encompasses three key pillars of work, namely:

    Research – generating policy-relevant evidence.
    Supporting the use of evidence in advocating for change and
    Strengthening capacities of policy partners to use evidence and learning to achieve change.

    The APHRC seeks to recruit an Advocacy Manager to work in the CPSE project within the Policy Engagement and Communication (PEC) Division. The Advocacy Manager will report to the Head of Advocacy Unit, PEC, while working closely with the CPSE project team, the Policy Engagement and Communications Division (PEC) and other APHRC units. Externally, the Advocacy Manager will work closely with national parliaments, Civil Society Organizations, UN agencies, regional economic groups such as EAC, EALA, SADC PF and ECOWAS/WAHO among others. S/he will also participate in regular meetings with Sida, the project funder. This role’s country scope includes Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
     Duties/Responsibilities

    Coordinate and work with the CPSE policy team in the management of partnerships.
    Coordinate policy engagement, communications, and capacity-strengthening activities for partners.
    Manage the Policy Officer in responding to rapid response requests from partners while managing the rapid response service.
    Sustain existing partnerships with EAC, EALA, SADC PF, ECOWAS, WAHO, AU, EANNASO, UNFPA ESARO and SAT, while initiating other useful ones.
    Work closely with the project team and lead in planning, implementing, and managing the advocacy and policy engagement activities within budgetary guidelines and donor compliance requirements.
    In collaboration with the Outcome Harvesting consultant, ensure consistent generation of quality data for timely decision-making at all levels and track performance of all project indicators, and delivery of quality narrative reports to the funder.
    Provide leadership and work closely with the CPSE team in mutual capacity strengthening of CPSE project partners.
    Work closely with the CPSE research team to develop knowledge translation products such as evidence briefs, policy briefs, fact sheets, and others for partners.
    Organize and lead policy engagement forums in liaison with research teams to disseminate research findings and promote the use of evidence in policy engagement.
    Developing and implementing robust and impactful advocacy and policy engagement strategies.
    Work closely with the project team in ensuring compliance with donor requirements such as keeping track of outputs and outcomes for advocacy and policy engagement, writing annual progress reports and updates to the project funder.
    Provide support to the broader policy engagement and communication division as requested, including writing division’s reports and fundraising efforts.
    Perform any other tasks required to advance the project and the division’s objectives.

     Qualifications, Skills, and Experience 

    Master’s degree in public health, public policy, public administration, social policy, anthropology, economics, communications, international development, politics and internal relations, sociology, social transformation or related sectors.
    At least eight years’ post-qualification experience in advocacy, policy engagement, and a year in research and analysis of sexual and reproductive health (including quantitative and qualitative), needed to build an evidence base from which you will work.
    Working on SRHR and health policy within the international development sector at a senior level; those who have worked on ASRH, LGBT and access to abortion preferred.
    Demonstrable experience in managing budgets, development of project log frames, reporting to the funder, annual work planning, project risk management working on sensitive issues, and solid experience of people management with excellent people soft competencies.
    Ability to manage research and promoting its use in policy/advocacy work.
    Experience working with different stakeholder, including NGOs, CSOs, and government bodies such as EAC, AU, SADC and ECOWAS/WAHO to inform and influence policy development would be an advantage.
    Ability to prepare high quality and impactful publications and reports for specialist and non-specialist audiences, including policymakers.
    Excellent engagement, coordination, and communication (written and spoken) skills to be able to absorb complex information and present it to different audiences in a clear and accessible way.
    Good interpersonal skills, to work and build relationships with a wide range of people and partners holding different views.
    Experience in policy development and advocacy in social or economic policy areas at a national level, regional or international level.

    Master’s degree in computer science, statistics, economics, machine learning, or other related technical disciplines;
    At least two years of experience in mining, processing, cleansing and quality assessment of data from diverse studies and organizations;
    Experience in data analysis using STATA, R, SPSS and data documentation software’s such as NESTAR;
    Experience in visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders and the use of relevant data science tools kit;
    Ability to regularly report and synthesize emerging information;
    Good communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.

    The appointment will be for a one –year period renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding.
