    This is an opportunity to work in a challenging and hugely interesting area of risk and make a significant contribution to Christian Aid’s ability to deliver our programmes in environments exposed to significant risk factors for terrorist financing and sanctions breaches.

    Crisis Context Lead

    Role Context

    This is a demanding role that requires flexibility and speed, good political judgement and strong writing and analytical skills. It will be approximately 40% externally focused and 60% thought leadership and policy analysis. Skills will include an ability to work well and collaborate across teams and functions, synthesise information, and strong analytical and communications skills. This role will work closely with relevant programme, humanitarian, development, peacebuilding and advocacy colleagues on some of the most complex and fragile crisis contexts in which we work.  It will advise UK and international level advocacy particularly targets at for example, the EU,  OCHR and UN Department of Political Affairs on protracted crises such as  Afghanistan, Ukraine, and East Africa ( contexts to be decided after prioritisation process with the International Department) and when  appropriate any other countries which descend into crisis. The role will  challenge long-term drivers and root causes of fragility and conflict which compound vulnerability and escalate the severity of crisis contexts. We believe that humanitarian intervention, peacebuilding and long-term development are interconnected. We work towards capacity for a localised response to crises, and a durable transition from violence to peace. Christian Aid believes that an effective response to a humanitarian crisis requires a coherent mix of immediate emergency response to meet lifesaving needs; longer-term resilience interventions to strengthen community capacities to cope with future shocks; and advocacy to tackle root causes of the crisis. We work with advocacy partners, including churches, to do this work

    About you

    The post-holder will be an expert who has experience working in and on crisis settings who can evidence publishing cutting edge analysis. Used to advocating within global influencing spaces at the highest-level,  they will drive  impact on complex crisis contexts undertaking evidence-based policy development and  transforming this into impactful advocacy products such as reports, speaking on panels etc.  

    The Crisis Contexts lead  will understand fragility, its drivers and the political economy of crisis  and how this is impacted by restrictions on civic space.  They will also be able to suggest solutions for example  in conflict settings steps towards  building peace and resilience. Working diplomatically and in conjunction with the International Department and policy and advocacy colleagues, this role will facilitate processes to bring together country staff, humanitarian, development, peacebuilding and advocacy colleagues with strategic advisers to fully understand and analyse the above and extra-territorial country contexts, and draft policy and advocacy responses to address specific crises.   The post-holder will use a feminist and decolonised approach to all their work. 

    Using their  knowledge and experience they will identify and prioritise a few contexts where Christian Aid has unique added value and build  a strategic influencing pathway to change. Working  with senior allies in peer organisations and think tanks, to identify political opportunities for change in even the most forgotten, complex or intractable crises. They will  build coalitions of the willing with external allies to advance a policy agenda with global and UK targets. Working closely with the Global Advocacy Lead, the Chief of UK Advocacy and Policy, and relevant humanitarian and From Violence to Peace  colleagues, the post holder will take an active lead in lead the development and implementation of a crisis contexts strategy  and in steering and managing appropriate advocacy responses to crises, this will always be done  in close coordination with country staff as well as develop where appropriate country specific products. 

    Key outcomes 

    ​​Ensure that Christian Aid’s crisis contexts, policy analysis, positioning and research and writing on crises is rigorous, influential and strategic.  
    ​Christians Aid’s knowledge products, research and positioning are legitimate and credible and co-developed with the research and learning team undertaking a decolonised approach.  
    ​There is a clear Crisis Contexts strategy that allows for long term objectives i.e.(policy and advocacy work)  tackling the root causes of crisis , alongside an ability to scale up emergency response advocacy 
    ​This  strategy is supported by a focused, well-articulated and realistic plan on crisis contexts  that is developed with our countries, and which is rooted in our programming, and that ensures the correct  attention is paid to change within countries and  global and Uk advocacy.  
    ​Manage our partnership portfolio of partners working in crisis contexts with integrity, valuing their knowledge and expertise and ensuring that Christian Aid opens spaces to them to advocate on their own behalf and where that’s not possible advocate on their behalf.. 
    ​In partnership with the Head of Global Advocacy and Policy mobilise the Christian Aid Crisis Response mechanism when appropriate. 
    ​Working with others across Christian Aid divisions to advise and provide technical policy and advocacy support to country programs, senior management and technical advisers on crisis contexts and other relevant policy areas such as resilience, food security, localisation, civic space, and conflict prevention. 
    ​Represent Christian Aid externally particularly in high level spaces to drive influencing agendas on issues fragility and crises. . 
    ​Build strategic alliances, coalitions and partner relationships including church partners  to maximise impact towards Christian Aid’s advocacy goals and objectives

    Essential 

    ​​Degree or equivalent. Graduate qualification in relevant social science or development studies, or commensurate experience. 
    ​Demonstrable experience of leading policy analysis and thought leadership on civic space, fragility, and crisis, leading rapid response to develop an agile and impactful crisis advocacy response. 
    ​Experience of having worked in a humanitarian or crisis context. 
    ​Strong understanding of conflict, peace, resilience, localisation and humanitarian issues and actors, including as they relate to international development, poverty, and inequality. 
    ​Demonstrable experience of publishing policy products 
    ​Strong understanding of how political and policy change happens and of effective advocacy strategies  
    ​Proven experience of building constructive working relationships with diverse stakeholders, and of working in networks or coalitions

    About the role
    The Human Resources & Administration Manager is responsible for ensuring that HR management strategy and functions are carried out effectively within the Kenya Country Office, in order to achieve the organization’s business objectives.  Responsible to ensure that the HR policies and practices are understood and applied effectively, fairly and cost efficiently throughout the office.   To be responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing essential HR Management, Employee Information management and HR administrative and operational systems within the country and to enable the team function smoothly and effectively. Proactively taking responsibility for making things work, for example managing the internal and external relationships that are relevant to people management and the performance of the relevant external suppliers and service providers.  It is responsible for the provision of Tier 1 HR management in-country and is a member of the country leadership team.  The role works closely with the Global/Regional/Africa HR functions.
    Key outcomes
    General Administration

    Compliance with Christian Aid policies, procedures and standards especially in the areas of HR management, Employee Information Management, HR Administration, and general HR operational systems in the office
    Effective and efficient HR processes and systems in place and maintained throughout the country office and for managing relationships with relevant partners and external suppliers.
    High quality advice provided to staff, managers and leadership on issues related to HR compliance and correct procedures including but not limited to record keeping/filing, recruitments, induction, performance management, employee relations and exit processes.
    Accurate maintenance of records, data and HR systems relating to office HR administration and operations, including the monthly, quarterly and annual reporting and fulfilment of all Christian Aid procedural requirements.
    Effective and efficient HR support within the employee life cycle, ensuring supportive systems that include legal, office environment, health, safety & security, quality management of contracts, local HR procurements and provision of first line HR technical support.
    Ensures adequate local inductions and onboarding is provided for new staff based on relevant CA policies and guidelines, as well as country specific requirements.

    About you
    The role is positioned within the Finance and operations Family and its focus is to ensure core Human Resource & Administration systems function effectively in the country programme. The role will directly support management with staff and other service provider recruitment, selection, induction and performance management, learning and development, governance and compliance and effective line management of human resource and administration staff.
    The role is jointly responsible for making strategic decisions with other country leadership team members; and plays a significant role in shaping the country office’s team structure, culture and ability to use systems effectively. It manages CA property and it sources and secures various contracts (with suppliers, service providers, consultants). The role is heavily involved in recruitment of new staff and ensures that staff are properly inducted.
    It is responsible for all health, safety and security issues pertaining to staff and visitors. The role has a strategic influence, e.g. involvement in setting the country programme’s strategic direction and developing and managing budgets within the country offices. The role is keenly involved in change processes including implementation of new policies and systems as they are rolled out. The role works closely with the Security Adviser to support the CM in security management, initiates health and safety training in-country, and ensures effective resourcing of health and safety for all staff (e.g. fire extinguishers). The role is also usually a member of the country-level Incident Management Team for handling any emergencies. The role is fundamental to creating a conducive working environment for all staff. The role is responsible to ensure that the country labour laws are in incorporated into strategies, policies and procedures in line with CA.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    HR Records & Information Management: Ensure quality and integrity of HR filing system by keeping all HR records, information and files clearly labelled, organised and confidential. Maintain staff personal files and ensure that all files have up to date information. Capture and update employee personal information data accurately and timeously in the People System including leave records and other HR related records. Produce HR data and reports as required and within set deadlines.
    Recruitment & Selection: Draft advertisements for authorised recruitments in liaison with HR Manger, ensuring conformity of job advertisements to job specifications and Christian Aid branding guidelines and recruitment practices. Facilitate advertising/circulation of advertisements on various platforms as agreed with Supervisor. Update and report on progress of the recruitment and selection processes through the HR recruitment & selection system and send feedback to applicants. Arrange for and coordinate interviews (date of interviews, calling short-listed applicants) administering tests and/or taking part in the interviews where necessary and ensuring all pre-employment documentation is in place. Ensure records of all recruitment and selection processes of employees and consultants are correctly filed
    General HR Support Services: Draft employment contracts, terms and conditions of employment or terms of reference, job profiles for employees and consultants, and draft requested letters in line with changes to employee terms and conditions of employment. Support line management in the development and implementation of induction and orientation of both new and existing employees, ensuring that all relevant policy documents are made available Contribute towards the country programme weekly progress updates. Follow up on completed performance review documents and development plans with line managers and update performance management records. Respond to general staff queries and advise them on Christian Aid’s HR policies and procedures and local legislative requirements, seeking advice from and referring more complex issues to the Human Resources Manager.
