    Objective of Internship

    Responsibilities of the Intern

    The intern will demonstrate motivated participation in the learning experience.

    At the end of the assignment, the intern will provide a full report demonstrating learning and achievements during the internship as guided by supervisor.

    Professional Requirements

    Students pursuing post graduate studies from reputable national, regional or international universities studying disciplines relevant to the work of the Save the Children International.
    Young professionals, on completion of at least undergraduate degree, who have not yet entered the formal employment arena.
    Should be available on full time for the duration of the programme.
    For Finance, in addition to a first degree, candidates should be either fully qualified CPA/ACCA or studying for the final part of either of the two courses.

    Role Purpose
    The role holder well be expected to initiate, oversee and support the implementation of BIA/BID process, child protection strategies and activities at the camp level. The BID/CP Officer will be responsible for supervising and managing the work of and providing guidance to the Community based workers.     KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

    Manage and support the individual case management through Child Protection BIA & BID development processes in the field offices,
    Provide mentorship and support to the community supervisors and workers through on the job training and guidance to enhance their case management skills and competencies.
    Design a capacity building strategy for CP/BID community workers and other stakeholders involved in the of BIA & BID process.
    Actively participate in interagency coordination meetings such as BID panels, CPWG and Case conferences both at DMO and in the field office.
    Analyse training schedules for the BID community workers and provide technical support and guidance for effective implementation of BID/BIA process.
    Ensure timely management of data and documentation of cases at camp level; and through coordination with MEAL assistants ensure children records, data are accurately recorded in the CPIMS database.
    Contribute to the design of an overall programme contingency plan when needed.
    Provide BID Supervisors with technical support regarding complex cases or specific technical difficulties.
    Produce timely progress reports, including both quantitative and qualitative information, on Child Protection activities and input into regular situation reports, monthly and quarterly reports.
    Ensure correct management of BID/BIA documentation at camp level.
    Manage and coordinate the planning of the Camp Child Protection activities to ensure minimal disruption to programme Activities-Including staffing issues and office administration; to ensure effective management of programme resources.
    Facilitate regular interviews and home visits with relevant persons who can give information on the child (the child, his/her family, leader, teacher, neighbour)
    Participate in camp level interagency meetings and engage in the identification and building of linkages with other partners/agencies, the Government and the community to ensure that issues related to child protection are raised and addressed.
    Comply with all relevant Save the Children policies and procedures with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, security, equal opportunities and other relevant policies
    Manage BID community workers staff annual leave and time off ensuring minimal disruption to programme activities.
    Collect required data and coordinate with the MEAL team on a monthly basis and ensure data is correctly captured.
    Identify and build links with other partners, ensuring that issues for child protection are raised and addressed.
    Coordinate the identification; follow up of children in alternative care and, monitoring of foster parents/Guardianship.
    Ensure the placement of children in alternative care adhere to SCI procedure and with the Kenya alternative care guidelines (Guidelines for Alternative Care of Children in Kenya 2011).

    Qualifications and Experience
    Essential

    Graduate degree in social work / social sciences or equivalent with preferably 5 years work experience in social work or with development-related organizations.
    Demonstrated ability to handle to a large BID/Case management caseload.
    Good communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
    Good IT skills including the use of Word and database software.

    Role Purpose:
    The post holder will be accountable to the Programme Manager for supporting Finance, HR, IT, supply chain and Administration services in programming contexts. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring compliance with SCI global standards, policies and practices.     Key Areas of Accountability

    Coordinate delivery and recording of items sourced from local suppliers working closely with Nairobi supply chain team.
    Manage fleet at field office level; Coordinate fleet requests, allocate vehicles, ensure compliance with all SCI fleet management policies and SOPs.
    Maintain records including allocation of assets and GPEs assigned to Field Office.
    Communicate with IT and Supply Chain for maintenance or upgrading or replacement of any asset assigned asset and GPE assigned to specific Field Office.
    Prepare and share monthly fleet reports with fleet officer in Nairobi.
    Assist the PM in security matters at the field office
    Responsible of goods and Parcel dispatches to Nairobi and the field respectively.
    Train and taught our vendors on child safe guarding policies e.g. drivers hazards while driving to the field areas.

    Financial Accounting, Planning and Budgeting.

    Assist with documentation at field office level. Consolidate all financial documents generated at field office and send to relevant officers in Nairobi; these include supplier invoices, staff liquation, Mpesa payment lists, receipts, etc.
    Assist as needed with daily programming accounting operation in liaison with Finance Officers in Nairobi; these include payment of suppliers, processing activity advances, payment of casuals, etc.
    Monitor field office and guesthouse utilities costs e.g. water, electricity, telephone/Mobile usage, billing, and others related office utilities.
    Scanning of all payment and share with supply chain and Admin focal point persons and Finance officer in Nairobi
    Responsible of petty cash at the field and sharing the balancing weekly
    Set up a tracking system at the field for all documents sent to Nairobi for processing
    Training of field teams on how to use finance documents, e.g. advance request, liquidations and Mpesa payments

    Support to Programme Delivery

    The Health Project Officer will play key role with Ministry of Health and stakeholders in coordinating, implementing, reporting and monitoring the project. S/he will have significant responsibility for delivery of timely results and for coordination with governmental, partner and community stakeholders at sub county level to ensure a coherent project model is established on the ground.
    Ensure effective delivery of community-based FP/HTSP intervention in synergy with the supply side to address the demand side causes of poor uptake of modern contraceptive among the semi/nomadic population
    Regular reporting to the Project Manager with monthly field updates
    Analyze and use project/field data to improve project implementation strategies.
    Provide effective on spot coaching to facility health workers on family planning
    Plan implementation of behavior change communication strategies targeting different audiences
    Organizing and rolling out training for community health volunteers, community health committees, Muslim religious leaders, mother to mother support groups and facility health workers
    Strengthen facility and community based data review for decision making

    Partnerships for RMNCH

    Ensure close collaboration with both local and international non-governmental organizations active in health programming in the county to facilitate knowledge sharing and refinement of the model.
    Ensure effective integration with other health grants run by Save the Children and other health partners in Mandera and Wajir to maximize the use of resources
    Provide on-going support to county government and other partners in OJT and clinical mentorship of health workers on family planning.

    Monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL)

    Work with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) team to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of programme activities including preparation of monitoring reports and mainstreaming accountability mechanisms.
    To support dissemination of study findings, including through the preparation of drafts of reports and manuscripts for publication; making presentations at SCHMT meetings; and supporting feedback to study participants.
    Contribute to advocacy for application of research findings in decision-making processes at county and subcounty level
    Make regular field visits, and document such visits, to review and support creation and strengthening of community-based structures and mechanisms needed for the process of social change, and to monitor project activities.

    Qualifications and Experience

  • Nutrition officer – Bioversity Project

    Nutrition officer – Bioversity Project

    Role Purpose: 
    Save the Children international Kenya country office in collaboration with Bioversity International intends to implement a Community-based Participatory Approach for Diet and Farm Diversity – a project aimed at improving dietary quality and livelihoods using farm and wild biodiversity in Busia County. The Nutrition Officer position will be responsible for implementation of the project to achieve the objectives outlined in the project document. The post holder will ensure the effective and efficient implementation of activities as per the scope of work outlined in the agreement. S/he will ensure timely and quality delivery of the deliverables. The main output is implementation of Community Action Plan (CAP), which outlines activities and processes for achieving the desired results. The role holder will be technically supported by Nutrition Technical Specialist and Child Poverty Technical Specialist. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.
    Contract Duration: 12 Months
    KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
    Project planning and inception

    Prepare project briefs in consultation with Bioversity International and Save the Children international technical team.
    Participate in the kick-off and various meetings in Busia County organised by Bioversity International.
    Collaborate with Bioversity International in identification and mobilization of project partners and collaborators.
    Collaborate with Bioversity International researchers and other partners in supporting community adaption of the prototype farm business school and nutrition education developed for use by Bioversity International and Save the Children.
    Participate in the co-learning and co-creation of knowledge during the Community Action Plan (CAP) development phase.
    Monitor the community groups during CAP implementation phase and oversee trainings conducted by implementing partners.
    Identify and conduct additional trainings as needed such as farmer, business schools and maintain training database of participants details – names, age, gender, ID or phone number
    Provide assistance for the smooth implementation of research activities by students and Bioversity staff (such as informing communities/stakeholders about visits).
    Participate in the co-creation with Bioversity International, local stakeholders such as the Busia county government, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry (MoALF) and Ministry of Health (MoH) and other interested parties.
     Participate in the development and dissemination workshops of the national scale up strategy for Kenya.
    Contribute to adaptation and contextualization of intervention manual and nutrition education tools.

    Monitoring, documentation and reporting

    Track project performance and document achievements.
    Document human interest stories, lessons learnt and best practices from the project implementation for learning and replicate in other project areas.
    Conduct day to day monitoring of the project activities, progress of activity plan and provide feedback to improve project performance.
    Plan and conduct data review meetings, document findings and recommendations and work with counties to implement the agreed actions.
    Plan and facilitate meeting with Bioversity project stakeholders by preparing the agenda of the meetings in consultation with Bioversity and minutes/notes and summary reports from the meetings and share with stakeholders after being approved by PM and/or chair of the meeting.
     In consultation with MEAL staff, develop process output and outcome level indictors for the Bioversity project in conformity with Save the Children MEAL plan and the Bioversity monitoring plan.
    Prepare context adapted farmer business school training and Bi-monthly progress and monitoring reports on the CAPs implementation for each of the target 5 intervention groups.
     Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual and final narrative reports as per agreement.
    Collect complaints and feedback during field activities and ensure that these are shared with MEAL officers for updating of the CFRM database
    Escalate complaints and feedback of a serious nature to Program Manager and field office child safeguarding focal point.
    Ensure quality implementation of the project
    Develop monthly activity work plan and track the progress regularly
    Ensure activities are implemented within the approved budget
    Develop quality monthly, quarterly and annual project performance reports for review by Technical Specialists and submission to donors and stakeholders
    Ensure integration of project plans in the County health and nutrition annual work plan (AWPs) by actively participating in County planning and coordination meetings.
    Be conscious of the activity budget to ensure all expenses are within the approved limits and meet Save the Children standards regarding financial management, accountability, and good governance

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
    Essential

    Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, public health, community development or equivalent.
    At least three years’ experience in humanitarian programs in an international NGO or similar organization.
    Experience in research methods such as participatory assessment (e.g. Participatory Rural Appraisal) nutrition assessments will be an added advantage.
    Good technical knowledge of policy and practice in the field of nutrition and livelihoods. Knowledge of natural resource, crop and livestock production and other cross cutting issues will be helpful.
    Good understanding of county government systems and operations including County and Sub-County Health Management Teams, agricultural Extension services and community engagement.
     An experience or understanding of community seasonal use of wild foods in meeting nutritional needs.
    An understanding of child rights and their protection and fulfilment in the development context.
    Proficiency in spoken and written English. Knowledge of the local language and context will be a distinct advantage.
    Good communication, presentation, training and report writing skills.
    Ability to take a proactive approach in community capacity building, either directly or through facilitation of suitable support and experience in leading a team in fieldwork with communities.
    Willing to work in isolated rural areas with basic living conditions, and work in difficult field conditions.
    Computer literate in word processing and excel packages
    Commitment to Save the Children’s Child Protection Policy.

    Ability to work in teams.
    Experience in designing and facilitating training sessions and activities for children and community structures.

    Regional Health and Nutrition Technical Advisor Administration Assistant

    Every child has the right to survival, a fundamental right which the Regional Health and Nutrition Technical Advisor will work to uphold through programming and advocacy. The Regional Health and Nutrition Technical Advisor will use their in-depth contextual understanding, technical expertise, and relationship building skills to provide a critical link between Save the Children’s global health and nutrition team and country level technical work, strengthening our representation and programme quality oversight at the regional level. They will contribute to building capacity and fostering networks across our 12 country offices in both humanitarian and development contexts. Areas of particular focus for Health in East and Southern Africa (ESA) include Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) and health systems strengthening. In addition, they will support a growing portfolio of nutrition work, specifically focused on maternal, infant and youth child nutrition, along with integrated nutritional analysis and programming. The role supports regional advocacy and influencing, particularly focused on newborn survival, universal health coverage and pneumonia prevention and treatment. They are the coordinating point person for health crises and large-scale outbreaks in the region, specifically facilitating access to technical resources and support for response to epidemics such as Ebola, COVID, measles and cholera. They will provide Quality Assurance and demand driven TA to COs, in line with regional priorities and design and input to implementation and monitoring of regional health programmes. The position plays a pivotal role in strategy design, capacity building, advocacy, representation and resource mobilisation.

    Qualifications and Experience
    Essential
    EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

    At least 7 years’ experience of delivering high quality health programmes with experience in humanitarian preparedness and response.
    Understanding of the development/humanitarian health and nutrition sector in ESA region.
    Excellent knowledge of theories and practices in Health sub-sectors: maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, health promotion and disease prevention, community-based health interventions, health educational interventions, health systems and nutrition.
    Knowledge of global health issues, specifically relating to children and women, and the current trends, methods, approaches, policies and strategies to address national and global health and nutrition issues, specifically in the context of conflicts, natural disasters, and recovery.
    Experience of strategy development and planning to develop multi-year, multi-stakeholder health programmes for development and humanitarian settings, including adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
    Experience of context, capacity and policy analysis, and influencing and advocacy at regional/international level in order to hold duty bearers to account to realise children’s rights.
    Skilled at networking, representation and partnership development in order promote learning, strengthen civil society and mobilise resources.
    Able to generate and use data and evidence to innovate, deliver, learn and share what works and what doesn’t work for children. Leverages evidence in advocacy work with donors and governments on policies and responses to structural drivers of food insecurity.
    Experience of promoting quality and impact through at least one cross-cutting area: gender equality and inclusion, resilience and/or safe programming.
    Demonstrated program design, monitoring and evaluation skills, including designing pathways to sustainable impact at scale.
    Track record in successful business development/fundraising with major institutional donors and UN agencies, in both development and humanitarian settings.
    Significant experience in training, capacity building, and mentoring with proven experience in facilitating presentations, webinars and multi-day training events.
    Proven ability to influence positive outcomes when not managing staff or programmes directly.
    Experience working in East and Southern Africa, and facilitating cross-cultural teams.
    Fluent in English and high level of English writing skills.

    Desirable:

    Experience in first wave humanitarian response, including multi-sector assessments and health response strategies. Experience with large scale outbreaks is an added advantage.
    Ability to programme with gender transformative, diversity and inclusion lens.
    Ability to speak Portuguese or other languages in East and Southern Africa.
