    Climate Manager Safeguarding Manager

    SHOFCO is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Climate Manager to play a crucial role in the organization’s efforts to address climate change impacts in informal settlements. The Climate Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing climate change programs, integrating climate considerations into SHOFCO’s activities in liaison with internal and external stakeholders and working closely with the community to build resilience to climate risks in informal settlements. This work will include overseeing and supporting sub-grants and organizational strengthening support to CBO’s addressing climate change impacts.

    Key Responsibilities.

    Strategy Development:

    Develop a comprehensive climate strategy for SHOFCO by coordinating technical inputs from external and internal stakeholders.
    Outline a roadmap for the organization’s climate-related activities over the next 5 years that includes advocacy and resource mobilization.
    Develop a long-term community engagement strategy on climate for informal settlement residents.
    Integrate climate considerations into all aspects of SHOFCO’s operations, ensuring that climate resilience and adaptation measures are incorporated into existing and new programs.

    Programme Implementation:

    Identify and assess climate-related risks in Kibera and other informal settlements where SHOFCO operates to enhance preparedness.
    Conduct participatory vulnerability assessments in pilot areas within Kibera.
    Design and implement community based adaptation climate programs in coordination with other SHOFCO departments and community-based organization partners with an emphasis of enhancing social capital to build resilience.
    Utilize SHOFCO’s youth network to raise awareness, mobilize community engagement about climate risks and promote the use of readily available climate information.
    Advocate for climate finance, specifically targeted at informal settlements at both national and county government levels.
    Monitor, report, and evaluate the impact of climate programs.
    Coordination of all climate-related activities in SHOFCO in liaison with other SHOFCO departments.
    Manage junior-level personnel as required.

    Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills).

    Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
    Bachelors Degree in any Environmental Science/Natural Science/Development Studies
    Master’s degree in Environment, Climate Change, or Natural Resources Management, or comparable professional experience
    Any training certification relevant to the role

    Other Requirements (Unique/job specific)

    Strong knowledge of climate change science, policy, and international climate agreements.
    Proven experience in developing and implementing climate-related programs and strategies in NGOs at national or international level.
    Experience working with community-based organizations in the context of sub-grants and/or capacity building.
    Experience in urban or informal settlements is an added advantage.
    Substantial field experience and the use of monitoring and evaluation approaches.

    Future Education Officer

    Reports to Head of Future Education.

    To support the Future Education Department by developing relationships with universities and scholarship organizations within Kenya and abroad, preparing students and parents for life after secondary school (i.e. via the gap year program) and guiding them through the admissions process (both KUCCPS, HELB, and international applications). Assist with the secondary school scholarship program, providing support to SHOFCO graduates as they attend secondary school – specifically focusing on scholarship opportunities through partnerships and aiding in the application process. As students continue in their post-secondary school journey, prepare them for success in the job market (i.e. assist with internship placement). As the Future Education officer, you will assist with project management tasks such as budgeting, workplans, reporting, etc.

    Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions
    Secondary School Support

    Guide SHOFCO Grade 9 students in completion of scholarship applications.
    Maintain existing relationships with partner scholarship organizations as well as monitor the landscape for new opportunities.
    Ensure SHOFCO graduates and parents understand the university admissions and higher education in Kenya and are prepared for the transition.
    Work with program coordinators to exposure students to university (i.e. tours of local universities) and leadership opportunities (i.e. ALA camps).
    Stay up to date on the changes in the education sector within Kenya in order to support students properly (i.e. CBC, changes to TVET process, financing model, etc).

    Gap Year Program

    Support students and families to navigate the university/TVET application process, including guiding students on course/institution selection.
    Manage relationships with KUCCPS, HELB, HEF, and other key stakeholders in higher education.
    Guide students to submit quality applications for external scholarship, both for university, gap year programs, and professional fellowships (i.e. check documents, review essays, etc.)
    Write recommendations for students to include in their university/internship applications.
    Develop a Gap year program for secondary school graduates to participate in ahead of joining university; inclusive of financial literacy, computer literacy, mental health, and advanced SRH training, maximizing on internal SHOFCO partnerships with other departments.
    Ensure students report to school on time.

    Post-Secondary School Support

    Proactively research scholarship opportunities and aim to develop relationships with universities in Kenya and abroad by sharing the SHOFCO story with the goal of securing placements for graduates.
    Organize and implement yearly annual workshop, focusing on career opportunities and jobs of the future.
    Develop relationship with students and track their academic performance and social well-being.
    Guide students to form an alumni program, to do things such as mentor younger SHOFCO students.
    Encourage students to find mentors.

    Job Market Support

    Proactively look for job and training opportunities and share with graduates.
    Assist students in creating job portfolios for academic internships and transitioning to job market.
    Organize workshops on CV building, interview skills, and how to search/apply for jobs.

    Project Management / Officer related tasks.

    Represent SHOFCO and the Future Education Department at various conferences/meetings; proactively seeking opportunities that will benefit the organization and following-through on such.
    Work to find measures to track progress of SHOFCO graduates and impact of SHOFCO on their lives and that of their family (metrics and evaluations).
    Work with the finance, procurement, and inventory team to ensure smooth running of the Future Education department.
    Work with head of department on yearly work plan and budget.
    Ensure compliance with finance/procurement department guidelines.

    Support Future Education / SHOFCO colleagues

    Aid in the development of a socio-emotional/leadership curriculum to be delivered to SHOFCO graduates during secondary school breaks.

    Build strong relationship with SHOFCO primary schools and partner to support students.

    Reporting to the Chief People and Culture Officer, the People and Culture Manager will play a critical role in overseeing the People and Culture Operations while coordinating and implementing People and Culture deliverables and activities.     Reporting to the Head of Future Education, he/she will be assisting 4 students who are preparing to transition from SHOFCO primary schools to US boarding schools. In order to ensure they are fully prepared for their transition, they will participate in US Academic Prep Classes from mid-January to mid-July. Central to their success is their English writing, reading and comprehension skills, and specifically their ability to read and analyse text and produce high quality analytical writing. The US Academic Prep English consultant will work with the students a maximum of 4 – hours per day/4 days a week on mentioned skills – schedule is still being finalized.
    Key Responsibilities/Roles

    Teach English skills: reading, writing, grammar, and comprehension, all to allow students to
    analyse text and produce high quality analytical material.
    Support students with use of new technology (laptops, Google and Microsoft suite).
    Inform students of US Classroom norms and cultural practices.

    Water Technician

    Job Purpose

    The water technician is responsible for the production process and supply of treated portable water through Reverse Osmosis & Ultra Filtration technology at SHOFCO water treatment facilities. The incumbent shall be responsible of the Lindi and Laini Saba water treatment sites.

    Position Objectives and Responsibilities

    Operate, monitor and maintain the borehole water pumping systems, including pumps, raw water tanks, clean water tanks, piping system and power supply systems
    Operate and maintain the water treatment to produce optimum quality, potable water for use in the SHOFCO facilities, water kiosks and other supply points
    Ensure production of adequate purified water to meet the daily water demand. This may require working extra hours, including weekends and public holidays. Be on call for emergency call outs when on shift or as need arises
    Monitor water levels for both raw and clean water storage tanks and ensure all SHOFCO facilities, water kiosks and other connections are adequately served
    Read flow meters, gauges and other recording instruments to measure water output and consumption levels
    Monitor and inspect plant equipment and systems to detect equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant systems are operating normally
    Perform minor repairs/maintenance or assist skilled external technicians with installation, servicing and repair of water treatment plant components
    Clean the plant room & all surfaces of the water treatment plant components
    Measure, mix and monitor chemicals levels daily or when needed.
    Maintain site logs, daily reports, inventory, and consumables. Recommend the purchase of relevant consumables and equipment as required
    Ensure safety standards are observed at all times

    Education, Experience and Skills

    Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical/Water Engineering or equivalent

    Professional Qualification

    Minimum 1-year experience in operating water treatment plants, particularly RO/UF plants
    Computer knowledge as most RO/UF plants use computerized equipment

    Functional Skills

    Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
    Ability to work without direct supervision
    Ability to attend and understand technical courses
    Ability to assume responsibility for complete operation of treatment plants
    Ability to detect problems in equipment operations

    Responsibilities:

    Execute communications strategies to enhance SHOFCO’s brand visibility and reputation.
    Create compelling content, including press releases, articles, blog posts, newsletters, brochures, program verticals, social media posts, and website copy, that effectively communicates SHOFCO’s mission, programs, and impact.
    Manage media relations activities, including building relationships with journalists, pitching stories, and coordinating media interviews and coverage.
    Monitor media coverage and industry trends to identify opportunities for proactive engagement and respond to media inquiries in a timely manner.

    Qualifications and requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
    Proven experience (5+ years) in communications, public relations, or related roles, preferably in the non-profit or social impact sector.
    Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling stories and messages for diverse audiences.
    Strong understanding of media relations, with experience in building relationships with journalists and securing media coverage.
    Proficiency in creating content for various channels, including press releases, articles, blogs, social media, and websites.
    Experience using social media management tools such as Hootsuite, and email marketing tools such as Emma and Mailchimp.
    Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
