    Role Overview and Responsibility:   
    The Legal Advisor will support the Programme Manager, the South Sudan team and the national partners to produce quality submissions, reports, and disseminate information to promote LAW’s and the partners’ work. They will provide overall support with project implementation monitoring, advocacy and fundraising. The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:  

    Programmatic and Legal:

    Develop high quality legal documents including submissions, reports, position papers, legal briefs, complex concept notes.
    Support the building of casefiles for strategic litigation, including legal research and drafting, open-source research, and participation to evidence gathering as appropriate.
    Support capacity building of partner organisations through providing logistical and substantive support to the design and delivery of trainings on investigating and prosecuting international crimes, legal aid, transitional justice, and other topics as required.
    Support the monitoring of the implementation of projects in the country and coordinate the work of the partners, with the support of the Programme Manager and Project Coordinator.
    Regularly update on relevant contextual development (political, economic, judicial, security, etc) and project activities.

    Advocacy and Communications:

    Support the implementation of the advocacy strategy and design products that can be shared with both internal and external stakeholders, based on evidence gathered from the programme.
    Contribute to the design and delivery of high-level advocacy events, liaising with panellists, preparing concept notes, agendas, flyers, and circulating all to participants.
    Coordinate and ensure that website and social media content related to the programmes is up to date and engaging audiences.
    Contribute to LAW’s advocacy tools, including factsheets and LAW Annual Report.

    Fundraising:

    Contribute to drafting of concept notes, proposals and donor reports.
    Draft donor briefings to highlight LAW’s projects’ impact.

    About You:

    Legal Right to work in Nairobi or Juba
    Graduate degree in law, human rights, international criminal law or related field.
    Admitted to practice law;
    4 years’ experience working in the field of law in domestic or international settings, drafting legal submissions and other legal documents and reports.
    Minimum 3 years demonstrated experience in implementing legal aid services, working with vulnerable communities and gender programming.

    Role overview and responsibility: The Finance Assistant will ensure performing efficiency across accounting services through documenting the project/grant financial transactions by compiling, analyzing, and verifying account information, and preparing account entries.
    The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:
    Reporting:

    Review and validate supporting documentation before processing of financial transactions to ensure all required documents are accurate and complete and authorizations are in place.
    Ensure setup and maintenance of all data required for processing financial transactions for assigned accounts in Navision financial accounting package.
    Record financial transactions following appropriate authorizations.
    Review and analyze various accounts to detect irregularities and advise on corrective actions and prepare correcting entries and adjustments, as necessary.
    Prepare journals for posting and ensure that all journals are posted into Navision.
    Support the Finance Manager in the budget preparation including review of new project proposals for internal & external submission.
    Prepare, monitor, alert the program managers, facilitate, and manage the process of closing expiring grants within the ninety (90) days period as required in the grants closure period;
    Ensure the integrity and quality of the data in the Navision financial database including and not limited reviewing, analysis of various account and alert the supervisor of any irregularities.

    Budgeting:

    Support in the preparation of the monthly Budget v Actuals Reports (BvA) and Master Budgets respond to any queries from programs relating to the BvA reports;
    Preparation of finance indicators reports on monthly basis alert management on any exceptions and make recommendations as appropriate;
    Monitor disbursement/receipt schedules for partners and staff BERs (Business expenditure Reports) alert relevant staff of due payments/liquidations and maintain appropriate communication and follow-up to facilitate timeliness of financial resource management;
    Evaluate and monitor LAW’s local partners financial management processes in accordance with partnership agreements and policies, monitor submission of and review monthly financial reports and provide timely feedback;
    Support and mentor LAW’s local partners in financial accounting and transactions, financial accounting policies and procedural compliance, and design and deliver capacity building programs to our partners in person and remotely;
    Prepare periodic and ad hoc financial reports, as needed, and perform variance analyses to assist with decision-making and proper management of financial resources.
    Perform assigned treasury (cash payment/receipt, cash forecast, etc.) duties if segregation of duties is ensured.

    Statutory:

    Ensure payment of staffs’ salaries, suppliers’ invoices, consultants, PAYE, NSSF, NHIF and other statutory payments are prepared on a timely basis.
    Support the human resources in reviewing monthly payroll before processing salaries.
    Petty Cash Management.
    Maintain and keep accurate and up to date hard copies and digital of financial support records.
    Ensure clear audit trail of processed transactions and their linkage to the accounting system. Support in implementation of any accounting and financial audit recommendations.

    Travel:
    This role requires regular travel up to 30% to the field.
    Required Skills, Qualification and Experience:

    The legal right to work in Kenya
    Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration with courses in accounting, or a qualification in accounting (CPA 2/ACCA 2 or equivalent)
    Minimum two years’ experience working in similar position preferably with an international and/or local NGO or demonstrated work experience in a similar role within a national or complex finance department or team

    BACKGROUND

    LAW is currently looking for a dynamic and committed individual to head up its Africa legal programmes. The person will be based in Nairobi with frequent travel. Currently LAW’s programmes focus on Somalia and South Sudan but LAW envisages this expanding in 2018 and beyond. The unique individual will not only run, define and expand LAW’s current Africa programmes but will have a key role within LAW and will be a member of LAW’s Senior Management Team.
    We are looking for an international human rights lawyer with programme management and fundraising experience. The person must be willing and able to undertake both high level technical advice and advocacy but also to undertake daily programmatic and administrative tasks in order to run a regional office. Currently ten staff will report to the position as well as numerous partners however, it is envisaged that this could significantly expand.     Position Description
    Reports to: Executive Director
    Functions/Key Results Expected

    Programmatic

    Responsible for leading and implementing the expansion of LAW’s Africa Programme including the creation of a three year strategy with the assistance of the Executive Director, LAW’s Senior Management Team and Board;
    Responsible for leading the implementation of LAW’s current Africa programme. This will include:
    Undertaking programme implementation and oversight of both staff and partners work on LAW projects in Somalia and South Sudan, including those on: addressing sexual violence; accountability of security forces; and natural resource exploitation and displacement. This will include working closely with senior members of the Somali government,; judiciary and law enforcement. This will also included working with LAW’s civil society; UN and donor network in Somalia and Kenya as well as expanding this network.
    Development and oversight of new research projects and publications;
    Identification, preparation and lodging of strategic litigation cases and other creative legal interventions with partners;
    Ensuring LAW projects and programmes are implemented to the highest possible standard through coordination of projects including managing all project staff, overseeing work done in field, etc.
    Development and maintenance of a network of relevant experts;
    Keeping up to date with developments and initiatives in areas relevant to the programme;
    Coordination with LAW’s senior management team and offices in London, Geneva, Beirut and Colombo (Sri Lanka) with a view to the development of the Africa Programme and of LAW as an organisation.

    Advocacy

    Preparing a regional advocacy strategy including social media;
    Identification and implementation of advocacy opportunities with a view to raising the profile of the organisation and its work;
    Attendance of conferences and events as a representative of LAW;
    Participation in high-level meetings, including bi-lateral meetings with senior figures from government, donors, international organisations and civil society;
    Acting as a media-facing spokesperson for LAW in Africa for television, radio, or other news media where required, especially in relation to LAW’s Africa Programme;

    Fundraising

    Creating a regional fundraising strategy including the identification of national and regional fundraising opportunities; preparing concept notes and proposals;
    Maintaining LAW’s current donors and expanding its donor base;
    Identifying and meeting with relevant donors in the region.

    Programme Management

    Oversight of all Africa programmes including managmenet and implementation of projects and project budgets;
    Ensuring reporting deadlines are met, writing narrative reports and checking them against financial reports, working closely with LAW’s Africa Finance Manager and LAW’s global Finance and Operations Manager;
    Taking the lead in seeking security advice and advising with the Executive Director with the assistance of security advisors in preparation for staff travel to Somalia, South Sudan and any other relevant locations.

    Administrative

    Overall management of LAW’s Nairobi office, including oversight of LAW’s Kenyan operations. A finance and operations manager in Nairobi office will run the ‘day to day” of the office:
    Assistance with relevant administrative or operations tasks as identified by LAW’s Executive Director.

    Skills And Qualifications Required

    Qualified lawyer with minimum of 7 years practice experience in human rights, criminal, family or refugee law. Experience working with cases of sexual and gender based violence preferred;

The person in this role will be work closely with the Head of Africa Programmes, administrative and financial staff in Nairobi and legal and programmatic staff in the field. They will take the lead on specific programmes and be given a large degree of autonomy, room for creativity and space to develop the projects they work on.
    The role will combine a technical legal focus with programme management and fundraising. We are therefore looking for an international human rights lawyer with legal, programme management and fundraising experience.     POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Programmatic:

    Leading LAW legal projects in Somalia and South Sudan including projects related to:
    Police oversight in Somalia and the establishment of the first independent complaints mechanism for security forces in the country;
    Capacity building and trainings of Somali and South Sudanese civil society and legal aid providers;
    Collection and documentation of evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in South Sudan for the purposes of taking strategic, groundbreaking international cases;
    Research projects on human rights violations, due process and other issues relating to law and justice;
    Coordination of the Somali Legal Aid Network;
    Close coordination with LAW’s offices in London, Geneva, Colombo and Beirut to coordinate research, legal advocacy efforts and identify strategic cases and other creative legal interventions;
    Working with international lawyers to identify potential for strategic transnational or international casework and working with them to draft legal arguments for such cases;
    Coordinating with other NGOs on joint projects and programmes;
    Serving as the first point of contact for intake of cases and managing the referral of cases;
    Any other programmatic duties as specified by the Head of Africa Programme or Executive Director of the organisation.

    Fundraising:

    Identifying potential donors;
    Writing concept notes, proposals and applications for potential donors;
    Drafting donor reports and maintaining records to enable accurate and timely reporting;
    Attending meetings with donors.

    Advocacy

    Representing LAW at events and conferences as needed, with a view to raising the profile of the organisation;
    Working closely with LAW’s Advocacy Team in order to identify relevant advocacy strategies for projects led by the Legal Advisor

    Administrative:

    Managing organisation website and keeping it up to date insofar as it relates to activities carried out in Kenya and throughout the East and Horn of Africa;

    · Assisting with the overall operation of LAW in Nairobi including carrying out general administrative tasks;
    · Participating and taking minutes in meetings via Skype with colleagues around the world.
    Skills and Qualifications Required:

    Masters degree in law or human rights;
    Qualified lawyer with minimum of 2 years practice experience in human rights, criminal, family or refugee law. Experience working with cases of sexual and gender based violence preferred;
    Demonstrated experience in programme management;
    Demonstrated experience in fundraising and liaising with donors;
    Excellent written and oral English, research and drafting skills;
    Experience advising government or judicial institutions preferred;
    Experience working in the East and/ or Horn of Africa preferred;
    Experience in overseeing the growth or expansion of an organization preferred;
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy;
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work on own and take initiative;

    The Legal Intern will assist in legal research and drafting, management of social media, attendance at meetings and involvement in fundraising and drafting of applications. The Legal Intern will perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the objectives and activities mentioned below:
    Specific Responsibilities

    Conduct thorough legal and factual research on human rights issues and situations in Somalia, South Sudan and globally, as assigned by the supervisor.
    Draft responses to inquiries from LAW stakeholders about the human rights situation in certain countries, the relevant legal frameworks and how human rights challenges should be addressed;
    Assist legal staff in drafting training manuals, presentations and other materials to support LAW legal program development.
    Analyzing and summarizing legislation and policy documents and jurisprudence;
    Maintaining a database of relevant jurisprudence and keeping it up to date with legal developments;
    Any other duties as specified by the Legal Advisor or the Executive Director of the organisation.

    Skills and Qualifications Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in Law; a Masters in Law is preferred;
    At least one year’s experience in working with international, humanitarian, human rights and/or environmental law;
    Demonstrated experience in working with an organisation that reports to donors, preferably including experience in drafting donor reports and writing concept notes and applications;
    Understanding of the Somali context and culture would be an advantage;
    Understanding of protection and displacement issues in conflict and post-context would be an advantage;

    LAW is currently looking for a dynamic and committed individual to head up its Africa legal programmes. The person will be based in Nairobi with frequent travel. Currently LAW’s programmes focus on Somalia and South Sudan but LAW envisages this expanding in 2018 and beyond. The unique individual will not only run, define and expand LAW’s current Africa programmes but will have a key role within LAW and will be a member of LAW’s Senior Management Team.
    We are looking for an international human rights lawyer with programme management and fundraising experience. The person must be willing and able to undertake both high level technical advice and advocacy but also to undertake daily programmatic and administrative tasks in order to run a regional office. Currently ten staff will report to the position as well as numerous partners however, it is envisaged that this could significantly expand.     Programmatic

    Responsible for leading and implementing the expansion of LAW’s Africa Programme including the creation of a three year strategy with the assistance of the Executive Director, LAW’s Senior Management Team and Board;
    Responsible for leading the implementation of LAW’s current Africa programme. This will include:
    Undertaking programme implementation and oversight of both staff and partners work on LAW projects in Somalia and South Sudan, including those on: addressing sexual violence; accountability of security forces; and natural resource exploitation and displacement. This will include working closely with senior members of the Somali government,; judiciary and law enforcement. This will also included working with LAW’s civil society; UN and donor network in Somalia and Kenya as well as expanding this network.
    Development and oversight of new research projects and publications;
    Identification, preparation and lodging of strategic litigation cases and other creative legal interventions with partners;
    Ensuring LAW projects and programmes are implemented to the highest possible standard through coordination of projects including managing all project staff, overseeing work done in field, etc.
    Development and maintenance of a network of relevant experts;
    Keeping up to date with developments and initiatives in areas relevant to the programme;
    Coordination with LAW’s senior management team and offices in London, Geneva, Beirut and Colombo (Sri Lanka) with a view to the development of the Africa Programme and of LAW as an organisation.

    Advocacy

    Preparing a regional advocacy strategy including social media;
    Identification and implementation of advocacy opportunities with a view to raising the profile of the organisation and its work;
    Attendance of conferences and events as a representative of LAW;
    Participation in high-level meetings, including bi-lateral meetings with senior figures from government, donors, international organisations and civil society;
    Acting as a media-facing spokesperson for LAW in Africa for television, radio, or other news media where required, especially in relation to LAW’s Africa Programme;
    Creating a network of relevant regional partners for LAW;
    Working with project teams, LAW’s advocacy team in Geneva, and project partners on the development and implementation of relevant, effective advocacy strategies designed to enhance the impact of LAW’s projects and the Africa Programme more generally.

    Fundraising

    Creating a regional fundraising strategy including the identification of national and regional fundraising opportunities; preparing concept notes and proposals;
    Maintaining LAW’s current donors and expanding its donor base;
    Identifying and meeting with relevant donors in the region.

    Programme Management

    Oversight of all Africa programmes including managmenet and implementation of projects and project budgets;
    Ensuring reporting deadlines are met, writing narrative reports and checking them against financial reports, working closely with LAW’s Africa Finance Manager and LAW’s global Finance and Operations Manager;
    Taking the lead in seeking security advice and advising with the Executive Director with the assistance of security advisors in preparation for staff travel to Somalia, South Sudan and any other relevant locations.

    Administrative

    Overall management of LAW’s Nairobi office, including oversight of LAW’s Kenyan operations. A finance and operations manager in Nairobi office will run the ‘day to day” of the office:
    Assistance with relevant administrative or operations tasks as identified by LAW’s Executive Director.
