  • Programme Coordinator

    Programmatic

    Oversee, support, and coordinate with the project team to ensure high quality programming with gender-sensitive and trauma-informed approach.

    Advocacy and Communications

    Support the implementation of the advocacy strategy and design products that can be shared with both internal and external stakeholders.
    Participate in coordination group meetings and workshops to identify avenues for knowledge-sharing and coordination for interventions, especially on GBV prevention.
    Support LAW hosted events: liaising with panellists, preparing concept notes, agendas, flyers, and circulating all to participants.
    Coordinate and ensure that website and social media content related to the programmes is up to date.

    Fundraising

    Draft concept notes to expand LAW’s programmes.
    Lead the drafting and review of donor reports.
    Draft donor briefings with visually appealing stories to highlight LAW’s impact of projects.

    People Management

    Support the programme team effectively, ensuring high-calibre staff are recruited and retained.
    Develop work-plans, which ensure training and development opportunities.
    Support the Programme Manager and HR to ensure LAW is compliant with all relevant legal requirements relating to employment law, safeguarding, security, health and safety.

    Legal

    Research support in preparing legal documents.
    Support in designing and delivering trainings and briefings on topics related to LAW’s programmes, and design related informative tools.
    Provide regular updates and analysis on key contextual developments.

    About you:

    The right to work in Kenya;
    Bachelor’s degree in law, human rights, international law or related field.
    Minimum 4 years relevant experience, with a focus on international criminal law, or international human rights law, or refugee law.
    Experience managing projects and programmes in the humanitarian and development sector and in project planning, design, monitoring and evaluation.
    Experience working with vulnerable individuals is essential, with experience working with victims and survivors of gender-based violence.
    Experience working with national civil society organisations in fragile contexts where civic space is restricted.

    Functions/Key Results Expected
    The Programme Manager has the following responsibilities:
    Taking the lead in the following projects on Somalia:
    A project establishing a Civilian Oversight Board over the Somali police force. This involves liaising with Somali police, civil society, government officials and other civil society actors operating in this space.
    Projects focusing on training Somali lawyers in the areas of investigation and prosecution of sexual violence. This involves taking the lead in running and organising the trainings, including writing the training agendas and materials.
    A project coordinating the Somali Legal Aid Network. This involves coordinating meetings and assisting in advocacy measures, including the coordination of joint statements.
    Advocacy and engagement on the passage of the Somali Sexual Offences Bill. This involves meeting with high level stakeholders including the Minister of Women and key donors, as well as writing press releases, liaising with media and coordinating social media campaigns.
    Taking the lead in the following projects on South Sudan:
    Training of South Sudanese lawyers on international laws relating to rape, torture, war crimes and crimes against humanity. This involves organising and leading trainings in difficult and sometimes insecure conditions.
    Assisting in the drafting of the Sexual Offences Bill and other key pieces of legislation, including writing or overseeing reports on best practices from comparative jurisdictions. This involves legal research and writing.
    Working with South Sudanese civil society on increasing the capacity of transitional justice mechanisms. This involves liaising with key partners in South Sudan, research on transitional justice and working together to identify solutions.
    General coordination of both projects including managing all project staff, ensuring reporting deadlines are met, writing narrative reports and checking them against financial reports, meeting with donors and partners, overseeing work done in field, etc.
    Working with international lawyers to identify potential for strategic transnational or international casework and working with them to draft legal arguments for such cases.
    Representing LAW at conferences and events.
    Manage budgets of all projects under portfolio with the assistance of the Finance Manager.
    In carrying out these responsibilities, the Programme Manager will perform the legal, fundraising and administrative duties and tasks outlined below:
    Legal:
    Undertake field and theory-based legal research;
    Analyse and summarise legal and policy documents;
    Develop legal documents including position papers, reports and legal briefs;
    Assist in writing policies and amendments to laws and policies relating to the peace and justice sector in LAW’s areas of focus;
    Organise legal training, seminars and workshops in both the domestic as well as international arena;
    Represent LAW to human rights and legal communities.
    Fundraising:
    Liase and meet with donors on behalf of LAW;
    Identify new funding opportunities for Somalia and South Sudan based projects;
    Write concept notes, applications for grants and budgets in the fields of law and justice, with a particular focus on forced displacement and sexual violence;
    Draft donor reports, maintain records to enable accurate and timely donor reporting;
    Represent LAW to donors at meetings, workshops and conferences.
    Managerial:
    Leading team meetings and being the primary programmatic liaison between Nairobi office and offices in Beirut, Colombo, London and Geneva;
    Supervision of Somali-based and South Sudan-based programme staff;
    Supervision of the Nairobi-based Legal Officer, Legal Fellow and Legal intern;
    Identify and hire staff for Kenya, Somalia and Sudan following LAW guidelines and with assistance of administrative staff in Kenya and Switzerland;
    Maintain LAW’s programmatic workplan.
    Skills and Qualifications Required:
    Qualified lawyer with minimum of 7 years practice experience in human rights, criminal, family or refugee law. Experience working with cases of sexual and gender based violence preferred;
    Excellent written and oral English, research and drafting skills;
    Experience advising government or judicial institutions preferred;
    Experience working in the East and/ or Horn of Africa preferred;
    Project management experience, including experience managing budgets;
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy;
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work on own and take initiative;
    Ability to meet deadlines;
    Flexibility; someone who is familiar with the volatile and unpredictable nature of working in post conflict environments;

    Duration of the assignment
    The consultancy position would be based in Nairobi with frequent travel to Somalia and South Sudan, and potentially to other countries within or outside of the regions.     The Legal Advisor will support the Programme Manager, and the team to produce quality legal submissions, reports, to implement creative advocacy strategies, and to promote LAW’s work.
    They will provide overall support with the management of information, advocacy material and fundraising. The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:

    Legal and Programmatic:

    Lead LAW’s litigation initiatives aimed at justice and accountability for victims and survivors of international crimes and human rights violations, including legal research and drafting complex legal submissions,
    Provide advice to the Programme Manager and Head of Litigation on courses of action, plan and lead the conduct of investigations including interviews of vulnerable victims and survivors, and coordinate the work of national and international lawyers and investigators;
    Research and draft high quality legal and advocacy documents including submissions, position papers, reports, legal articles and analysis of legislations;
    Lead capacity building and mentorship of partner organisations, justice actors and lawyers through substantive and logistical support to the design and delivery of trainings on investigating and prosecuting international crimes, legal aid, and other topics as required;
    Lead and support, as appropriate, the design and delivery of transitional and transformative justice information sessions and workshops with victims and survivors, and support the implementation of national and local, formal and informal justice processes.

    About You

    Ideally, you have the legal right to work in Kenya.
    A degree in law, with post-graduate experience in human rights law, international criminal law, national criminal law and criminal procedure, or a related field;
    Significant experience drafting high level legal and advocacy products and conducting complex legal research;
    Proven technical knowledge of human rights law, domestic law, international criminal law, humanitarian law and public international law;
    Excellent organisational skills, with ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines;
    Work independently and in collaboration with the LAW teams, and to show initiative and creative problem-solving.

    Regular regional travel will be required.

    Role Overview and Responsibility
    The HR and Logistics Coordinator will be delivering a comprehensive support to the teams and ensure compliance, and perform activities in accordance with responsibilities outlined below:
    Human Resources

    Lead on the recruitment and selection process; drafting job descriptions, advertising, short listing, scheduling interviews, preparation of appropriate interview documents and liaising with candidates, also participating on interview panels;
    Lead on staff probation and ensure performance reviews are held in a timely manner with the line manager; identifying training needs and developing professional development plans;
    Accountable for HR documents, including maintenance of confidential personnel files, leave records etc to ensure these are accurate and up to date;

    Security

    Support the Programme Manager to maintain and develop security plans; risk assessment in coordination with the Operations Director;

    More detail:  The Finance Coordinator will be responsible for internal and external financial reporting and capacity building for our local partners, assisting them in budget preparation related to grants, funds, and ensuring adherence to LAW’s policies and donor requirements.     Support the Communications Manager in Geneva to develop a social media plan and identify various audiences for LAW’s social media channels, and plan how to increase LAW’s engagement in country;
    Support the Communications Manager in Geneva to design and implement a social media schedule, ensuring content is planned well in advance for key activities, and proactively respond to breaking news;
    Collaborate to populate the global social media plan, and in coordination with the Communications Manager, design, deliver and maintain engaging content for LAW’s key social media channels, including Twitter, to create impactful stories, case studies, and other engaging content;
    Maintain a strong coordination mechanism with locally hired consultants, as videographers and photographers, and with global graphic designers and coordinate planning and deliverables;
    In coordination with the Communications Manager in Geneva, ensure all visual materials developed by the global graphic designer meet the expectations, and match LAW’s visual identity and vision;
    Lead on the creation, and design of innovative, information toolkits (audio, digital) that will be used by Survivor Advocates for their field work;
    Support the Global Communications Manager to maintain and update content for regional website pages;
    Research and analyze performance on the various platforms and make recommendations on how to improve our communications.

    About You:

    The legal right to work in Kenya;
    Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, media relations, journalism or relevant field;
    Minimum 4 years demonstrated experience working in journalism, media relations, advocacy or communications in a similar role;
    4 years proven experience in a similar role designing, drafting and developing traditional and social media content for dissemination;
    Relevant experience working within an international NGOs is preferred, ideally in human rights or humanitarian field;
    Track record of highly effective content production and social media management;
    Excellent knowledge of video editing;
    Excellent written and oral skills in English; second regional language (Arabic, Somali etc.) is an asset, with the ability to clearly articulate information to various audiences and stakeholders;
    Ability to work on own initiative and part of the wider team;
    Experience in photography; ideally with DSLR cameras or similar (desirable)
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite especially Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint and strong technical literacy.

    Role Overview and Responsibility

    Support the building of casefiles for strategic litigation, including legal research and drafting, open-source research, and participation to evidence gathering as appropriate.
    Support capacity building of partner organisations through providing logistical and substantive support to the design and delivery of trainings on investigating and prosecuting international crimes, legal aid, transitional justice, sexual and gender-based violence, and other topics as required.
    Regularly update on relevant contextual development (political, economic, judicial, security, etc) and project activities.
    Support the monitoring of project implementation, coordinate the work of partners, and reporting on indicators.
    Undertake other assignments as may be requested by the Programme Manager and LAW management.
    Coordinate internal and external meetings, missions, workshops and other project-related activities.

    Advocacy and Communications

    Support the implementation of the advocacy strategy and design products that can be shared with both internal and external stakeholders, based on evidence gathered from the programme.
    Contribute to the design and delivery of high-level advocacy events, liaising with panellists, preparing concept notes, agendas, flyers, and circulating all to participants.
    Coordinate and ensure that website and social media content related to the programmes is up to date and engaging to audiences.
    Contribute to LAW’s advocacy tools, including factsheets and LAW Annual Report.

    Fundraising

    Identify potential fundraising opportunities applicable to the programmes and as per LAW priorities and policy.
    Contribute to drafting of concept notes, proposals and donor reports.
    Draft donor briefings to highlight LAW’s projects’ impact.
    Prepare presentations and talking points as required.

    About you:

    5 years’ experience working in the field of law in domestic or international settings, drafting legal submissions and other legal documents and reports;

    Experience working across insecure or conflict-affected and fragile environments, demonstrated understanding of protection challenges within the region and of the East African domestic, regional, and international criminal justice and human rights mechanisms;
    Excellent oral and written communication skills in English with the ability to clearly articulate complex information to donors;
    Track record of research and drafting skills;
    Excellent organisational skills and analytical skills with attention to detail;
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong IT literacy;
    Demonstrated skills and experience establishing positive relationships and engaging with various stakeholders both internal and external.

    Regional travel in East Africa will be required.

    Role Overview and Responsibility:

    The Advocacy Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Department for Policy, Advocacy and Communication (DPAC) to promote LAW’s work and to increase visibility, promote key events and advocacy activities in country, in the regions, and globally. The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:

    Advocacy:

    Report to Head of Policy, Advocacy and Research and to Programme Manager, without bias, on local and regional contexts, with regards to humanitarian, human rights, legal and security issues, to provide reliable information for further decision-making.
    Support collection and analysis of data (briefing papers, talking points, reports etc.) to inform legal strategies and advocacy efforts.
    Implement advocacy activities to influence others’ practices, policies, narratives, in order to bring positive changes for the benefit of LAW clients and affected populations.
    Develop and maintain relationships with key interlocutors – authorities, local communities, UN agencies, other humanitarian actors, international stakeholders etc., to promote LAW’s priorities, concerns, and coordinate initiatives.
    Organise discussions, training, briefings, monitoring/data collection, stakeholder mapping and current and future advocacy activities etc. and liaise with LAW colleagues accordingly.

    Communications:

    Support the Communications Coordinator in Geneva to develop a social media plan and identify various audiences for LAW’s social media channels, and plan how to increase LAW’s engagement in the region.
    Support the Communications Coordinator in Geneva to design and implement a social media schedule, ensure content is planned well in advance for key activities, and proactively respond to breaking news.
    Collaborate to populate the global social media plan, in coordination with the communications Coordinator.
    Assist in the creation, and design of innovative, information toolkits (audio, digital) that will be used by Survivor Advocates for their field work.
    Support the Communications Coordinator to maintain and update content for regional website pages.
    Conduct field visits and interviews and take professional photos and videos for championing and profiling successful stories and social media posts.
    In coordination with the Communications Coordinator in Geneva, collate information from the country programmes for the global newsletters and website content.
    Any other task requested from the line manager.

    About You:

    Masters degree or equivalent in political sciences, anthropology, social sciences, law, migration studies, human rights or a related subject.
    At least four years professional experience working for a humanitarian organization or similar (e.g. NGOs, UN agencies, donors, human rights, government) in advocacy or related field (e.g. research, analysis, human rights).
    Preferably two years of field experience in humanitarian settings.
    Track record of strong advocacy experience: policy research/analysis/making, lobbying/diplomacy, strategy formulation, experience of influencing policy/practice change, representation, public communication.
    Demonstrated experience in data collection (e.g. qualitative research, human rights monitoring, refugee casework etc.)
    Excellent writing, research and analytical skills.
    Good understanding of current humanitarian debates
    Fluency in English (plus preferred working knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic.
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy.
