    About This Role

    We’re looking for a Research Lead at Busara to manage a portfolio of current Busara projects, ensuring high-quality work is delivered; manage our academic network, academic – advisory partnerships, and new collaboration opportunities; support on Busara’s international lab expansion; and line manage our team of managers and specialists with a growth mindset focused on mentoring and developing their expertise.

    Lead the Research Methods and Innovation vertical (25%)
    Lead the lab vertical with a focus on portfolio building, researcher network building, efficiency and quality of implementation. Be the voice for the lab internally and externally.
    Work closely with the Director to drive the strategy of the Labs vertical by setting, planning and executing on annual targets, and ensuring clear vertical harmony on priorities for the organization.
    Manage, motivate and coach lab staff across our global offices and lead development of team building events. Facilitate the development of team members’ skills and expertise through identification and execution of capacity building initiatives.
    Work closely with other Research Leads to identify opportunities for collaboration and opportunity development across verticals. Liaise with finance, operations and people teams for any inter-divisional processes.
    Manage communications to ensure clear internal knowledge management and harmonization across the lab vertical.
    Ensure the overall operational quality of the lab vertical, including that research and data systems are maintained and processes adhered to with the strictest standards: — – Build learning and iteration into research processes and protocols – stay current on the latest research in quantitative methods to incorporate findings into Busara’s approach to research and to provide creative direction for engagements. Develop tools and toolkits that incorporate and codify learnings from the lab, other verticals, organizations and disciplines to set quality and standardized protocols for the vertical. Improve, codify and ensure adherence to our approach to ethical and open science standards
    Harness the value of the lab participant database toward remote and in-person research through improving identification methods, database management, and segmentation.
    Streamline internal processes (management of people, research, assets) and project budgets with a focus on efficiency and cost effectiveness and regularly coordinate within and across divisions, as needed
    Support the development of a portfolio of projects that contributes to quarterly and annual business development targets for the division
    Engage in proactive and reactive business development by leading contracting for our reactive engagements and by designing proposals, concept notes, and pitch decks for new partnership opportunities (eg. for KITE, courses) and knowledge sharing. Present at conferences, networking events, or client meetings.
    Develop and consolidate a network of researchers to support portfolio building and long-term partnerships to form a sustainable stream of revenue for the lab.
    Proactively design internal research, thought pieces, and demos to help facilitate new research offerings and service lines
    Manage and coordinate a portfolio of projects across multiple client bases (primarily academic researchers, but also private sector, government etc.) Structure successful project onboarding and offboarding exercises to support knowledge management between projects.
    Structure, design, and deliver our current and new external and internal engagements to client’s / PI’s satisfaction. Lead the pricing of current and future offerings and engagements from the lab.
    Serve as the primary relationship manager for clients, partners, and PIs. Understand and preempt needs of stakeholders through proactive communication and troubleshooting.
    Develop and ensure Busara’s standards for quality of research protocols, pre-analysis plans, implementation plans and research ethics are followed across our work.
    Strategically assemble the vertical structure and teams on projects that maximize the probability of success, but also develop new skills and competencies among Busara’s talent pool and supporting divisions. Liaise with projects division to understand the pipeline of projects and lab support requirements.
    A Master’s degree in Economics, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or related fields. Strong technical understanding of economics, statistics and/or evaluation is necessary.
    3-5 years of previous work experience in a related field with internal and external stakeholders.
    Strong project management skills and experience with the ability to lead projects with a high degree of autonomy.
    Strong leadership alongside a clear focus on collaborative working, including experience line managing and supporting team members to develop their own skills and expertise.
    Strong quantitative skills including knowledge of and experience working with data analysis software with a focus on experimental social science and causal inference.
    Expertise in designing and implementing experiments (lab and/or field).
    Experience working with academic clients and managing large-scale research.
    Familiarity with behavioral science.
    Fluency and excellent communication and writing skills with a mastery of English.

    What you’ll do: Associates lead the planning, execution, and day-to-day management of Busara projects.     Responsibilities

    Manage and implement the performance management cycle; oversee goal-setting exercises, carry out periodic performance management engagement, and reporting.
    Take actions based on performance appraisals including recommending training and development plans, initiating and tracking performance improvement plans, and also reward or promotions as appropriate.
    Update competency frameworks, sensitizing managers and employees of competencies required per each job group; monitor the progress of employees against competencies.

    ABOUT THIS ROLE
    Research Leads are key to setting and implementing the vision for methodological rigor at Busara and the vision for how our internal research can most support the fields of behavioral and development research. The portfolio they manage will set the standard for thought leadership in the research space and focus on addressing important research gaps and translating findings into Busara practices and external communications. Research Leads are expected to provide strategic direction and researcher support to the product development teams at Busara, managing these products and tools to ensure they best serve the research process, maintain standards of data quality, and meet researcher needs. Research Leads also contribute heavily to setting an internal research agenda in the areas of methodological, ethical and cross-cultural research and independently, and with the support of a team of research specialists, develop research questions and designs that support this agenda. Research Leads should be able to identify how and when to engage external stakeholders, and/or other divisions within Busara. Research Leads will manage our team of research specialists. Research Leads sit in the Research and Innovation Division at Busara and are expected to work hand-in-hand with the Head of Division and other Research Leads, and will report to the Head of the Research and Innovation Division.
     
    *The Research Lead will have the option to be remote for the first 6 months contingent on COVID-19.
    The Research Lead will have the following key responsibilities:
    1. Lead the Research Methods and Innovation vertical

    Set the agenda for Busara’s portfolios of product development, internal research and research tool creation.
    Set quarterly vertical objectives in product development, internal research, and internal research tool creation.
    Determine the priorities for product development, using “research value add” as a guiding principle.
    Determine the most important areas for internal methodological research for improving Busara’s processes, by specifically reducing the cost and increasing the robustness of remote research methods. 
    Determine the most important areas within ethical research practices and cross-cultural research to push forward.
    Manage a team of research specialists and officers, their work portfolio, and their career and skills growth.
    Manage the connection of PhD students who are interested in working with Busara to internal research projects.
    Review outputs and track timelines of product development and internal research.

    2. Set research agendas and help design internal experimental research projects.

    Work with research specialists to set agendas for methodological, ethical, and cross-cultural research, and help ideate research questions and avenues of exploration and prioritization within these areas. 
    Assist research specialists in the design of internal experiments in the above areas.
    Design internal experimental research projects in the above areas, including generating research questions, experimental designs, pre-analysis plans, and in some cases developing research instruments. In some cases, Research Leads will directly manage such projects.
    Ensure the translation of methodological and ethical research results and output into tool-kits, guidelines, thought pieces, conceptual pieces, and working papers, and manage their dissemination internally and externally.

    3. Product development management

    Manage the development of Busara’s key research products in partnership with the software development teams. This includes providing strategic direction and a view on researcher needs and priorities, with a mind to making tools easy and efficient and cost-effective, and that aid high-quality data.
    Manage the roll-out of these products internally, to ensure that research teams can utilize these and that internal feedback on products is collated and delivered to the software development team to inform fixes and new feature development. 
    Manage the rollout of these products to external parties.

    4. General duties

    Ensure research specialists provide ‘office hours support’ to other teams for technical research questions.
    Review projects division research outputs (pre-analysis plans, experimental designs, analysis outputs etc.) on a piecemeal basis to ensure technical quality.
    Support Busara training on an ad-hoc basis, specifically in experimental design.
    Assist  with the development of internal documents to support Labs’ Division operations.

    Requirements

    A Master’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, Social Sciences, or related fields.
    Strong knowledge of the experimental social science literature (economics, political science, psychology)
    Experience designing lab and/or field experiments
    Strong analytical and writing skills
    3+ years previous work experience in a related field

    Scope of work:

    Reduction identify and proactively raise potential issues or opportunities for improvement in accounting practices, financial processes, and controls, working with Busara senior management to address or implement solutions
    Responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant statutory requirements and standards in Kenya and other African markets where Busara works
    Produce reports and provide actionable budget guidance and financial planning advice to project teams, starting from the proposal stage, and including budget monitoring and project closeout
    Oversee the design and implementation of accessible, actionable training to project staff on relevant Accounting policies
    Update and oversee Busara’s Accounts Receivable process and policies
    When Busara opens an office in a new country, train Operations staff there on Accounting, continually monitoring compliance with our policies and practices
    Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
    Proactively develop Busara’s financial forecast analysis to assist in areas such as management of currency risk, cost allocation rates, etc.

    Desired Candidate Profile
    The right applicant would have the following skillset:

    5+ years of experience in accounting and/or auditing
    An advanced degree in business, economics, finance, or a related field (MBA and/or CPA qualification)
    Deep knowledge of standard accounting principles (GAAP, IFRS, etc.)
    Prior professional experience in Africa preferable
    Experience managing a small team
    Advanced working knowledge of NetSuite accounting software (or extensive experience with a similar system)
    Financial modelling experience
    Ability to effectively communicate and project financial policies to other staff
    Ability to aggressively anticipate workload and issues, in order to prioritize team workflow and deliverables
    Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity of accounting information
    Strong experience in financial analysis and building projections, with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (with the ability to work with lookups and pivot tables)

    Job Description

    As Busara grows, we are looking for an experienced Mobile Apps Developer to join our development team. 
    You will be working closely with an existing team of developers, project teams, and lab teams to support existing client projects and creatively develop solutions. 
    The role will be responsible for offering inspirational space to create the next innovation in mobile applications, the development, and maintenance of applications, and integration to backend services. The role will champion the best standards for the development of mobile platforms.
    Your role and responsibilities

    Gather, document and craft technical and system design requirements
    Develop and support mobile gaming apps
    Write up UI/UX requirements
    Create interface mockups for mobile applications
    Work from these mockups to build functional, high-performance applications (web and mobile)
    Provide training and support to internal teams
    Build reusable code and libraries for future use
    Implement security and data protection policies on applications.
    Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the project supervisor or direct manager

    REQUIREMENTS
    Skills & Requirements

    Strong understanding of the Android and iOS mobile OS, their strengths and bottlenecks
    Strong enthusiast of agile methodologies such as scrum, etc
    Analytical skills: the ability to recognize the needs of customers and create new applications that answer those needs
    Communication: ability to clearly communicate ideas to coders, teammates, and management
    Ability to creatively invent new ways of approaching problems and developing innovative applications
    Strong understanding of the mobile stack and how it integrates to other development stacks including RESTful APIs, database systems, security, performance tuning, cloud message APIs, secure offline storage, mobile data extraction and push notifications
    Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements
    Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git
    Familiarity with the use of additional sensors, such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, etc.
    Experience with offline storage, threading, and performance tuning 

    Nice to Have

    Understanding and experience in native Android development with Java and/or Kotlin
