Legal Officer Procurement Manager Strategy & Planning Officer

Purpose of the job
Reporting to Corporation Secretary, the job holder will be responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Legal department, provision of legal advisory services and ensuring effective management of legal and contractual risks including follow-up work on depositions to participating in client interviews or assisting in the courtroom.
Legal Officer Job Duties and Responsibilities
Reviewing and advising management on legal implications of internal policies and procedures.
Reviewing and draft contracts, agreements and internal policies and ensuring that they are in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements.
Reviewing progress of outstanding litigation and liaising with and managing external lawyers.
Formulating compliance check-lists to be used for the purpose of ensuring that all information required is provided accordingly.
Continuously monitoring compliance with statutory obligations and advising management accordingly.
Reviewing and providing legal advice on tender documents.
Reviewing ongoing cases and advising management accordingly.
Liaising with relevant departments to ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken.
Providing legal protection and risk management and advising management on contract processes.
Providing and interpreting legal information, conducting training and disseminating appropriate legal requirements to staff.
Preparing monthly and quarterly reports for the department for senior management meetings.
Reviewing all contracts or any other documentation where the Authority has committed itself and assessing legal implications that need to be brought to the senior management’s attention.
Preparing, reviewing and modifying contractual instruments to assist and support various business activities.
Negotiating, reviewing and drafting documentation for business transactions and preparing and advising on the necessary checklist to be adopted to ensure information is submitted on time.
Providing continuous leadership, supervision, training and development of department staff ensuring an effective and motivated team.
Liaising with the HR department in conducting performance appraisals and ensure competency and training gaps are addressed.
Qualifications for the Legal Officer Job
Bachelor’s degree in law from a university recognized by the Commission of University Education;
Masters degree will be an added advantage; and
Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
At least 7 years legal experience in a leading organization2 years of which should be on supervisory level
Proven track record of providing accurate and effective legal counsel; and
Proven track record of development of comprehensive contract documents that mitigate risk and penalties.
Personal attributes
Excellent relationship management and communication skills necessary for interaction with the Government of Kenya, the Judicial system and negotiating parties;
Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience with, laws dealing with government and/or commercial contract administration, particularly contract negotiation, preparation and administration;
Ability to provide independent advice (orally and in writing) to senior level management on highly technical matters;
Demonstrate success in managing and conducting a variety of litigation matters;
Good planning and organization skills; and
Proven ability to delicately solve sensitive matters.
Core technical competencies
In-depth knowledge of regulatory law; and
Knowledge of the legal aspects of capital markets.
