Job Grade: VPI.9 – Job Ref. No: KVVI- 002/08/2017Job Summary:Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.The Legal officer will be responsible for the development and enforcement of a robust legal and regulatory framework aimed at protecting and safeguarding all interests of the Institute.(a) The duties and responsibilities shall include:1. Driving the legal agenda of the institute as per the Strategic Plan;2. Providing legal advice and interpretation of relevant Acts of Parliament to the Board and Management;3. Representing the Institute in legal matters;4. Drawing contracts, leases and other legal instruments including Licence on Agreements, Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) and Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) for the Institute;5. Receiving and serving of legal documents including sermons;6. Carrying out research on legal issues affecting the institute and its interests;7. Preparing legal reports on matters involving the institute for presentation to the Board and Management.8. Preparing and presenting Board’s annual returns to the relevant authorities;9. Updating and maintaining the Institute’s legal records;10. Ensuring registration and patenting of services, products, technologies and innovations developed by the Institute;(b) Qualifications and experience1. Have a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) degree from a recognized Institution;2. Postgraduate Diploma in legal studies from the Council of Legal Education;3. Have a current valid practicing certificate;4. Be registered member of LSK;5. Be registered as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya;(c) Core competencies:1. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills;2. Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity to and respect for diversity;3. Have a clear understanding of manufacturing and commercial principles in a public sector setting;4. Have an understanding of the structure and functions of the public sector;5. Be knowledgeable on international contracts and associated documentation;6. Be a result oriented person;7. Be computer literate.
