OUR MANDATE
The Kenya Film Classification Board, a state corporation under the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Ar… read morets is mandated by Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of Laws of Kenya to regulate the creation, broadcasting, possession, distribution and exhibition of films in the country with a view to promote national values and morality. The Kenya Information and Communications Act (KICA) further empowers the Board to
i) Impose age restrictions to ensure that content which depicts or contains scenes that are rated as adult or are of the language intended for adult audiences are not aired during the watershed period (between 5am -10 pm) and
ii) Enforce the programming Code for the free-to-air radio and TV services by ensuring that all programme and non-programme matter, namely commercials, infomercials, documentaries, programme promotions, programme listings, community service announcements and station identifications are classified before they air
FUNCTIONS
The Films and Stage Plays Act has empowered the Board to:
i.Regulating the creation, broadcasting, distribution, exhibition and possession of film and broadcast content by:
a.Classifying TV and radio programmes as stipulated in the Programming Code for free-to-air Radio and TV Services in Kenya
b.Classifying all non-programme matter, namely commercials, infomercials, documentaries, programme promotions, programme listings, community service announcements and station identifications.
c.Ensuring that content which depicts, contain scenes or are of the language intended for adult audience are not aired during the watershed period
d.Giving consumer advise by empowering film and broadcast content consumer with knowledge to make informed choices
ii.Registering and licensing film agents, local and international filmmakers, distributors and exhibitors.
iii.Prescribing and developing guidelines on film and broadcast content regulation in the country.
OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
1.Reviewed Film Classification Guidelines to incorporate the requirements of the Constitution and cater for technological advancement and consumer preferences
2. Implemented strategies that have led to increased compliance to classification requirement for film and broadcast content
3. Implemented the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on Parastatal Reforms that consolidated all the regulatory functions at KFCB
4. Operationalized county based offices to take our services closer to the people
5. Enhanced our equipment for quality service delivery to our customers
6. Enhanced our visibility through sustained media and public campaigns
7. Carried out 26 major joint sensitizations throughout the country in the last 6 months with learning institutions, faith based organizations, security agencies, County governments, NGOs
8. Established collaborations both regionally and internationally
9. Supported the growth of the film industry by sponsoring different industry related activities such as Riverwood Awards
