Kenya Farmers Association – KFA was founded in 1923 by White-settler farmers in Soy in present-day Uasin Gishu County and their counterparts in Nakuru County.
KFA’s initial role was meant to solve the problem of marketing farmers produce. Though started by a handful of farmers, the Associat… read moreion grew in leaps and bounds ï¬nancially, and also became a farm input outlet by constructing an imposing four-storey building.
After independence in 1963, the colonial settlers were still in charge of the Association until 1971 when an African,Mr. S. Amalemba, was elected managing director and W.Ngumi the chairman.
The Association, over time became ï¬nancially strong and vibrant, spreading its tentacles across the country with 65 branches before its woes began in 1985. The once vibrant association was renamed Kenya Grain Growers Cooperative Union (KGGCU). However, the change of name did not help. The association deteriorated further to an extent that during the 1996 annual general meeting, members then numbering 65,000 demanded that it reverts to its former name, KFA.
