    This internship is located in the Gender and Safeguards Unit of the UNEP Policy and Programme Division at the Nairobi duty station. The Purpose is to provide an opportunity for students and graduates to obtain a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of the United Nations, learn, develop new skills and gain experience.
    The internship is for a duration of six (6) months
    The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
    Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
    In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
    Responsibilities
    Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer and the day-to-day supervision of the Gender & Safeguards Officer, the intern will be responsible for the following:

    Support gender mainstreaming by reviewing project proposals and related documents and providing feedback
    Carry out research and summarize key developments and emerging trends related to gender and the environment
    Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas and feedback on key topics and issues
    Provide support to the Gender and Safeguards Unit and assist with planning and coordinating meetings and events
    Provide support to the International Gender Champions (IGC) Nairobi Hub Coordinator and assist with planning and coordinating meetings and events of the hub
    Performs other duties as required

    Education
    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
    Have graduated with a university degree.

    Be computer literate in standard software applications.
    Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
    Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    Work Experience
    No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
    Languages
    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

    Job Summary
    This position exists to provide strategic leadership and operational management in the implementation of the institution’s technical decisions in line with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Intergovernmental Relations Act, 2012 and the committee’s strategic plan specifically in execution of the following functions in line with the committee’s strategic plan and departmental work plan;

    Functional analysis, costing & transfer of functions
    Assets and liabilities and related records

    Operational Responsibilities/Tasks

    Undertaking functional analysis and transfer of residual functions to either level of government as provided under the Fourth Schedule;
    Undertaking costing of functions for optimal resource allocation and utilization;
    Coordinating the transfer of functions, power or competencies from and to either level of government;
    Conducting transfer of assigned functions by mutual agreement between the two levels of government;
    Validating the inventory of all the existing assets and liabilities of government, other public entities and local authorities;
    Making recommendations for the effective management of assets of the national and county governments;
    Initiation and development of knowledge based research to inform policy decisions on issues affecting devolution and intergovernmental relations.
    Ensure compliance with the approved work plans and execution timelines.
    Coordinate officers working in the division.
    Facilitate preparation of proposals for resource mobilization.
    Coordinate the preparation of quarterly reports for Summit, monthly reports of the committee.
    Coordinate preparation of the department’s quarterly reports.
    Coordinate the preparation of general monitoring reports for the division.

    iv.    Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution.

    Professional Qualifications/Membership to professional bodies

    Be a member of a professional body for a minimum of 8 years.
    Have a Certificate in Strategic Leadership lasting not less than six  (6) weeks     from a recognized institution;
    Meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution and attach clearance certificates from DCI- Certificate of good conduct, EACC, HELB -Compliance Certificate , KRA – Compliance Certificate and CRB – Clearance Certificate
    Previous relevant work experience required.
    Have at least twelve (12) years professional experience in public service three (3) of which should be in the level of Deputy Director or an equivalent senior management position.

    Have served in a reputable organisation for twelve (12) years, five (5) of which should be in a senior management position.
    Have demonstrable competence in administration of not less than five (5) years;

    JOB SUMMARY
    Community Based Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (CB-MHPSS) programming at HIAS includes a focus on individuals, families, and communities. The overall goal of HIAS Community-Based Mental Health Psychosocial Support programming is for forcibly displaced people and vulnerable migrants to have improved mental health and psychosocial well-being helping them to access their rights. This goal may be achieved through three key outcome areas: (1) Family, community, and social structures promote the psychosocial well-being and resilience of women, men, girls and boys;(2) Individuals and communities develop healthy coping mechanisms; and (3) People with mental health and psychosocial problems use appropriate focused care, including referral to specialized care when needed.
    HIAS seeks to recruit a Best Interest Determination (BID) Specialist who will carry out program goals and objectives associated with all Child Protection activities. The Specialist will be responsible for the Best Interest Assessment and Determination process for all identified children. This includes children with mental health challenges, which impair their normal functioning.
    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    Overall management of the Best Interest Assessment (BIA) and Best Interest Determination (BID) processes of all identified children and finding durable solutions.
    Work closely with the Child Protection Officer to ensure effective management of the assessment and documentation processes of the Refugee Children.
    Support conducting and follow ups of BIA/ BID interviews for case management.
    Review BIDs & BIAs presented by the Social Workers to ensure they meet the required standards before submission to the BID panel.
    Submit BID cases with findings and make recommendations on a bi- weekly and monthly basis to the Child Protection Officer.
    Present reviewed BIDs, BIAs and Home Visit reports to the Child Protection Officer
    Support and foster inter-partnership coordination on child protection project with UNHCR & other partners
    Coordinate closely with other partners and the District Children’s Officer, ensuring compliance with the Children’s Act of Kenya, and other legal and institutional frameworks, and promote the sustainability of initiatives undertaken.
    Represent the organization at external meetings as may be assigned by the Child Protection Officer
    Be a strong advocate for children’s best interest in all care arrangements and wider discussions affecting children’s welfare.
    Support Organizational compliance to the Child Protection Policy.

    Qualifications Requirement
    Degree in Law, International Relations, Social work, Gender and Development Studies, Community Development or Counseling Psychology.
    Required Knowledge and Experience

    Previous practical experience in the BID process; minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in Child Protection Programs.
    Demonstrate experience in Child rights & protection issues in the Kenyan context including knowledge of international and national legislation and policies.
    Solid knowledge of UNHCR BID Guidelines and Field Handbook for the Implementation of UNHCR BID Guidelines.
    Solid knowledge of Alternative Care in Emergencies toolkit and the Kenya’s National Guidelines on Alternative Care.
    Experience in designing and conducting trainings such as UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Child Protection Policy, Effects and Forms of Child Abuse among others for a variety of actors.
    Strong self-starter with demonstrable ability to adapt to changing program priorities and emergency priorities that may arise.

    Required Skills

    Ability to work successfully within deadline requirements.
    Fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
    Positive attitude towards community work with emphasis on the ability to learn from communities and support participatory, innovative approaches to problem solving.
    Excellent communication skills and ability to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathetic with all children. 
    Knowledge and skill in Computer Applications
    Excellent analytical and report writing skills.
    Ability to work in a demanding and high pressured environment
