About the Job
The Protection Interpreter supports in oral interpretation and written translations to and from Somali / English and contributes to the achievement of the protection objectives. He/she works closely with the Protection Delegates.
This is a resident/National position based in Nairobi with frequent travel to Somalia.
Duties and Responsibilities
Contributes to the analysis and understanding of Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) issues in Somalia and more specifically in the geographical area covered
Supports the protection delegates in establishing and maintaining a network of relevant interlocutors
Contributes to the preparation of oral and written representations and supports through translation or interpretation of these documents
Translates information and assists in the preparation of dissemination material related to protection activities/issues adapted to the Somali context
Translates correspondence and other essential documents from Somali to English and vice versa
Supports the department in gathering and analyzing protection-related information
Minimum qualifications and required competencies
University Degree in English Education, International development or qualification in a related field of study
4 years’ experience in a similar field in a Humanitarian organization
Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)/ International Human Rights Law (IHRL) is an asset
Ability to analyse the socio-political and cultural environment, the dynamics of conflict zone and inherent humanitarian/protection challenges
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
High level of confidentiality and discretion
Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali languages
Computer proficiency especially in MS Office suite
