Terre des Hommes Netherlands is looking for a full time project officer for the Kenya Country Office, to be based in Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travels to the Coast. This is a national short term position, open to applicants who can prove the right to live and work in Kenya.
Objective of the Project Officer Role
As part of our larger programme addressing child sexual exploitation at the Kenyan Coast, which comprises of advocacy, prevention and service provision interventions, during the peak tourist season of December 2019 – March 2020, TdH-NL intends to run an awareness campaign dubbed ‘Do not Look Away’ focusing on child sexual exploitation in general and more specifically on sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism. This campaign will combine awareness creation for child sexual exploitation in general (perpetrators being locals as well as tourists), with a call to action for the general public to ‘Do not look away’ and report cases of sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism specifically.
TdH-NL is looking for a short term project officer who will work with the media consultant hired to run this campaign on behalf of and under the guidance of TdH-NL.
The Media Campaign Project Officer will be responsible for the day to day implementation of the project, ensuring close monitoring of the media consultant to ensure timely delivery of activities. He/She operationally reports to the Country Manager Kenya, while at the same time receives mainly technical guidance from the Senior Communications Officer East Africa, with whom (s)he will be working closely together.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
a) Support Implementation of the CSEC Project in the Coast
Constantly work with the media consultant to ensure timely, efficient and effective implementation of the media campaign project.
Ensure efficient use of project resources and fulfillment of programme and finance commitments as per the consultancy contract.
Guide the planning of the awareness campaign, while ensuring harmonisation within the existing CSEC programme at the Kenyan Coast, to create synergy of all the (communication) activities planned in this period across all TdH-NL ongoing CSEC projects.
Work closely with TdH-NL’s partners in the Coast region, all relevant stakeholders to ensure coordinated services to victims of CSEC identified during the campaign period.
Monitor the progress of the project including focus on support to victims of CSEC identified, other child protection concerns and provide feedback and advice to the Country Manager and others as appropriate for decision making.
Programme results for the media consultant and project portfolio
Support and monitor the project consultant through regular communication and programme visits and ensure that programme and finance commitments as per the consultancy contract are being fulfilled. Liaise with the TdH-NL Finance and Administration Officer regarding budgets and expenditures.
Ensure that all scheduled project reports such as progress and financial reports are delivered timely and that they are of good quality, according to TdH-NL’s standards.
Support the Senior Communications Officer East Africa at the TdH-NL Regional Office with information and materials for marketing and communication, e.g. news items (case stories, articles) and photos.
Manage the procurement of branded items, if and where applicable, and other initiatives to increase TdH-NL’s visibility in-country.
Maintain the database and regularly update project documentation/ files for reference by all concerned.
In close collaboration with the consultant, monitor all media activities, their reach and their impact; and report on the same

Guidance and support to the Media campaign consultant
Provide the required support to the consultant to ensure smooth implementation of activities as per the agreed scope of work and key deliverables.
Guide the consultant and other project partners so that they improve on quality of work, efficiency, effectiveness of the desired outputs and sustainability of results.
Safeguard project quality by maintaining an overview of supported projects and evaluating the quality of work and results. Ensure that project consultants follow the terms and conditions of the signed contract; facilitate them to keep track of key factors in project management, implementation and monitoring of results.
Academic qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and desired Behavoiours
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in development studies, project management, child rights, journalism, communications, or public relations.
A minimum of 3 years experience in planning and executing media and public relations campaigns, within a not-for-profit environment focusing on awareness creation on child protection issues.
Experience in Child Rights programming, Child exploitation and Child abuse is an advantage.
Knowledge of and experience in project cycle management, including the use of Theory of Change and other planning tools.
Experience with financial management.
Strong interpersonal communication skills – excellent writing and oral skills in English and Kiswahili.
Planning, organising & cooperation, performance oriented.
High degree of taking initiative and working independently.
Thorough and precise working style, with strong attention to detail.
Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities.
