An officer at this grade will be required to independently initiate and implement research projects.
Duties and responsibilities at this cadre will include:-
problem identification;
formulating research project/ proposals;
study design;
implementing research projects;
engagement in inter-disciplinary research;
preparing technical reports and scientific publications;
using other methods to disseminate research findings in their areas of specialization;
providing guidance to junior research scientists/interns in their areas of expertise; and
any other duties as may be assigned from time to time..
Qualifications
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) or equivalent;
Bachelor’s honors degree or equivalent degree in any of the following fields: Physical Sciences/ Oceanography, or other relevant disciplines from a recognized University;
Master’s degree in any of the following fields: Physical Sciences/ Oceanography, or equivalent;
Knowledge in programming in MATLAB;
Knowledge in oceanographic instruments (Acoustic Meters, CTDs, etc) as well as oceanographic software (e.g. RDI and Nortek software) is essential;
Ready to work out of office and outside normal working hours;
Able to work on survey vessels at sea;
Evidence of engagement in community work or other related contributions;
A minimum of six (6) peer reviewed publications with at least three (3) first authorship as a Research Scientist II;
Participated in development of at least one research proposal; and
Satisfactorily served as a Research Scientist II or equivalent position for a minimum period of three (3) years.
