Overview
This position is a cluster resource covering East Africa Markets and will report into the Head of Market Development for Sub Saharan Africa. In view of MasterCard’s business evolution, there is a need to strengthen the Sub Saharan Africa regional strategic vision to drive business development in order to reach the following objectives:
Build scale and increase market share MasterCard by accelerating business development opportunities and partnerships in priority marketsSupporting the development of strong in country plan strategic digital payment business plans
This position is designed to identify, develop and execute Digital Payments business development opportunities across East Africa
Responsibilities include
MPQR /Digital Payments growth through non-traditional acceptance and partnerships with a focus on cash displacement through digital payment solutions (MPQR focus) infrastructure and partnerships.
Fintech, MNO, Retailer and Third-Party Payment Facilitator Business Development
Acquiring and Issuing Bank Business Development with a focus on digital and MPQR growth / enablement
Regulatory oversight (in relation to Interchange impact on acceptance and issuing wrt ensuring MPQR economics; regulator scans across markets and engagement to open digital payments)
Major Accountabilities
Go To’ person for MPQR/Digital Payments Development across East Africa markets ensuring alignment between the individual markets ‘go-to-market’ approaches and the overall digital strategy for MPQR / Masterpass, taking into account the region’s longer term strategic initiatives. This individual will be responsible for developing dedicated Acquirer and Merchant, Issuing Bank, MNO and Fintech relationships to drive the MPQR/digital agenda.
Establish strong relationships with the players in the payments value chain and work with new players to provide new models to the market. This individual will enhance merchant/retailer/MNO relationships by creating value along the lines of relevant and specific value added solutions. The candidate should be able to quantify the benefits for both parties through an understanding of MasterCard’s P&L and maximizing revenue for all parties through an effective acceptance strategy.
The role is an individual contributor role requiring the candidate to be a self-starter and be able to function independently using high levels of relationship management skills.
The role demands capability to operate at a strategic and operational level and work with high levels of empowerment and accountability.
This role will lead the East Africa Digital Payment (including but not limited to MPQR) business in the region from a functional perspective– focused on building a scalable and replicable business model for MPQR and other digital payment solutions.
This role will be accountable to delivering all the associated KPIs relating to the MPQR /Digital Payment programs identified including but not limited to developing associated partnerships, and relevant use cases that drive transaction growth.

Qualifications Required:
Good working knowledge and understanding of payments vertical focusing on digital payments.
Sales and business development – additionally experience within the acquiring / acceptance space including merchant acquiring will be an advantage
An understanding of Consumer & Corporate products and services (Consumer cards & Corporate cards), experience in Digital payments & acquirer relationships preferred
Numerical abilities & financial acumen, comfort in working with numbers, P&L, developing business case models. Detail oriented. Strong Commercial acumen and Complex deal structuring Skills
Self-Starter, Results, driven, comfortable with remote/virtual working.
Negotiation Skills, Solution design and Presentation skills
Requires familiarity with the breadth of MasterCard products and services to support acquirer and processor daily activities, education and sales training.
Requires an in depth knowledge of the operational capabilities of acquirers/processors and their organizational goals, objectives and vision.
10 + years of relevant experience in acceptance / payments / technology / banking verticals
Relevant tertiary qualifications.
