Editorial & Content Director

Job description
This position is open to candidates in Nairobi.
Responsibilities:

Proprietary Content (50%)

Directly manage Asoko’s content production pipeline and content team, including the editorial manager, editorial assistant and network of stringers;
Work closely with Asoko’s Research Director to oversee a growing team of 10+ analysts across Africa to build content for the Asoko platform and specific clients;
Ensure proper structure, flow, tone, consistency and overall quality of any piece of Asoko content;
Work closely with graphic designer to ensure final content output is by publishing standards;
Aggregate and ensure quality assurance and control of all third-party content, including news, reports and other partner content;
Sample content includes: Global FDI to Ethiopia; Kenya floriculture market; Nigeria bottled water map

Communications Content (20%):

Fully manage and drive the strategic direction of Asoko’s weekly newsletter;
Work closely with Asoko’s marketing department on quality of communications content, including social media streams, PR materials, blogs and newsletters;
Collaborate closely with Sales department on subject matter and distribution;

Management (20%):

Constantly train and develop Asoko in-country analysts’ writing and analytical skills;
Assist HR Manager in the hiring of any new editorial staff;
Commission content from external contributors as needed;
Build and manage Asoko research internship program;
Contribute frequently to corporate strategy discussions on business development, platform development, operations, content and PR;

PR and Thought Leadership (10%):

Attend conferences as an attendee, speaker, or moderator;
Comment in the press on behalf of Asoko;
Cultivate institutional partnerships in Africa and US, in coordination with the Sales and Operations departments;
Conduct outreach to prospective clients, in coordination with the Sales and Operations departments;

Requirements:

5+ years of experience as an editor of an Africa focused (online) publication
Demonstrable expertise in African business and economic affairs
Demonstrable interest in and knowledge of producing diverse and creative content
Ability to train and manage a growing team of analysts and editorial support staff
Ability to travel to Africa frequently when required
French, Portuguese and/or Arabic language is useful but not required
