Job Description

The Position:
This project seeks to recruit an ambitious PhD researcher to analyse and compare science-policy engagement practices and processes concerning climate change adaptation and mitigation in the region’s diverse livestock systems across three East African countries. The candidate should expect to analyse existing policy frameworks and dynamics, barriers and enabling factors for integrating climate change research into policies and strategies, efficacy of science communication and engagement strategies, and transformation of scientific inputs through their integration into policy processes.

Responsibilities of the fellow

To determine the existing policy frameworks for climate change within the east African countries;
To determine the efficacy of science communication and engagement strategies within the project;
To collect, compile and analyse data;
To communicate the gained findings to project team and other stakeholders;
Write scientific papers and prepare conference/workshop presentations describing results and their implications;
Develop new concepts and ideas for further research;
Make presentations at meetings as may be required

Requirements for the ideal candidate

Should have MSc in qualitative social sciences (such as science and technology studies, geography, sociology or political science); 
Should already be enrolled in an accredited PhD programme and prepared to begin fieldwork soon; 
Should be conversant with UNFCCC processes in developing countries;
Must have some knowledge of the adaptation and mitigation literature in lower-income countries;
Experience in handling of diverse datasets, data processing and statistical software such as R, SPSS, Matlab or python;
Ability to work in a multinational team of scientists and technicians from other disciplines;
Have excellent communication skills.
