The Role
To accurately measure, report on and support the progress and impact of Whizz Education’s activities, there is a need to engage an M+E Officer to support our project teams. The role will be an integral part of our work in Kenya, enabling us to demonstrate how and where we have contributed to accelerated learning in the communities where we operate. Whizz Education is one of the 4 companies implementing iMlango Project in Kenya. Through IMlango, Whizz provides digital resources in mathematics – backed with training – to support teachers to deliver whole-class lessons across 205 rural schools. Additionally, each child in 139 of those schools is individually tutored in maths within internet-enabled computer labs through the leading virtual maths tutor, Maths-Whizz.
Mission for the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer:
Provide high quality monitoring and evaluation support at field, county, project and consortium level within iMlango and other related Kenya-based projects. The successful candidate will be the lead for M&E activities across all projects for Whizz in Africa.
Key responsibilities

Data analysis

Run SQL queries to extract relevant information from Whizz database
Produce school/county-level data analysis to support the work of Customer Success Managers
Produce project-level data analysis to inform strategic direction and progress
Conduct quantitative analysis of specific initiatives within the project to demonstrate their impact
Analyse trends and patterns within the Maths-Whizz data to help demonstrate impact and identify risks to the project

M+E

Play an active role within the iMlango m+e steering group, representing Whizz within the Consortium and contributing towards discussions related to the project MEL Framework and Theory of Change
Develop internal tools for extracting and recording quantitative and qualitative data

Reporting

Conduct analysis of data to support quarterly donor reports, evaluating progress against logframe targets
Prepare detailed analysis (reports, infographics etc.) of project activities to inform team meetings and discussions and share successes
Monitor and prepare weekly and monthly KPIs, including proactively identifying risks and suggesting remedies

General project duties

Produce and contribute to papers and reports which demonstrate the success of Maths-Whizz
Participate in overall projects’ activity planning
Contribute to wider Whizz Education’s activities

Outcomes:

Analysis reports produced illustrating impact of Whizz activities in Kenya
Donor m+e reporting requirements successfully completed
Project staff effectively supported at all levels in relation to data and m+E
Project risks averted through skillful interpretation of data
M+E tools created which meaningfully capture Whizz progress

Desired skills and competencies
Education, Experience and Skills set required:

Statistical training, as evidenced by degree qualifications
At least 5 years’ direct experience of monitoring and evaluation within a project
Proven ability to communicate data to non-specialist audiences and within both academic and commercial contexts
Experience in impact evaluation
Experience in baseline and end-line design, including supervising an evaluation team
Excellent application of Excel for data processing
Proficient in statistical computing scripts/packages, e.g. Python, R, MATLAB
Knowledge of SQL desirable

Analytically minded; enjoy solving problems and searching for trends
Can see the big picture of data but also engage with the small details
See data as a powerful storytelling tool, but also appreciate its limits
Recognise that all data is situated within a particular context and are cautious in drawing inferences
Confident and excited by the prospecting of engaging diverse stakeholders including business owners and the Education Officers, both at National and County level
