Job objective
As the Head of Compost, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of compost production, management, and utilization within the farm to ensure sustainable soil fertility, efficient waste management, and optimal crop yields. This role requires expertise in organic matter decomposition, nutrient management, and team leadership to enhance farm productivity while adhering to environmental standards.
Your tasks and responsibilities
Plan, implement, and monitor the entire composting process, including collection, preparation, and decomposition of organic materials.
Ensure proper aeration, moisture control, and temperature management to optimize compost quality and nutrient content.
Supervise regular turning, monitoring, and sampling of compost piles to ensure uniform decomposition.
Implement best practices to achieve high-quality, pathogen-free, and weed-seed-free compost.
Develop and maintain efficient systems for collecting organic waste from the farm’s indoor and outdoor operations.
Oversee sorting and processing of waste materials to ensure only suitable inputs are used for composting.
Work with other farm departments to identify opportunities for recycling and minimizing waste.
Collaborate with the agronomy team to determine compost application rates and schedules based on soil tests and crop needs.
Monitor the impact of compost applications on soil structure, fertility, and crop performance.
Advise on integrating compost use into the farm’s broader nutrient management plans.
Recruit, train, and manage composting team members to ensure smooth operations and adherence to standards.
Provide regular training on composting techniques, safety measures, and environmental compliance.
Maintain accurate records of compost production, inputs, and applications.
Prepare regular reports on compost quality, usage, and cost-effectiveness for the Crop Protection Manager.
Your profile
Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in composting, soil management, or agricultural waste management.
Strong understanding of composting principles, organic matter decomposition, and nutrient cycling.
Familiarity with composting machinery and tools.
Knowledge of soil fertility management and sustainable farming practices.
Attention to detail in compost quality and safety standards.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
Proficiency in record-keeping and reporting
