Our client, an internationally operating multinational consumer goods company with a diverse product portfolio, seeks to appoint a Legal Assistant to strengthen their legal team based in This, Kenya.

JOB PURPOSE:

The position is tasked with ensuring the prompt and proactive delivery of legal guidance to operational teams in Kenya while driving the successful implementation of the Legal Functional strategy and objectives. Responsibilities include providing expert advice to Kenyan entities on all legal aspects related to commercial, operational, governance, and regulatory business matters.

The position encompasses a comprehensive range of duties and responsibilities, requiring the incumbent to perform critical tasks with precision and efficiency. Key responsibilities include managing project timelines, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to established protocols. Additionally, the role demands meticulous attention to detail in data analysis, report generation, and stakeholder communication. Proficiency in industry-specific software and adherence to compliance standards are essential prerequisites for success in this dynamic environment.

Collaborate in formulating and implementing the Legal department’s strategic initiatives to align with organizational objectives.

Monitor and analyze Kenya’s legislative landscape to ensure the business remains informed of relevant legal requirements and fulfills its compliance obligations.

Maintain a comprehensive grasp of regulatory matters and the applicable regulatory environment affecting the business, and assume accountability for devising strategic solutions that empower the business to effectively address and navigate regulatory limitations.

The incumbent will assume responsibility for overseeing all litigation matters initiated by or against the business as directed by the Head of Legal, Kenya, which includes formulating and implementing case strategies.

Provide assistance to the Head of Legal, Kenya in overseeing entity management and maintaining adherence to robust corporate governance standards for our client’s entities within the jurisdiction.

Engage in collaborative cross-functional business projects and initiatives, providing input to evaluate, oversee, and proactively identify potential threats. This role focuses on mitigating legal risks while ensuring the successful attainment of organizational objectives.

Craft, finalize, and oversee contractual documents while establishing and refining standardized formats to enhance operational effectiveness within the Legal sub-function.

Perform essential administrative functions within the department to maintain resource availability, facilitate the seamless exchange of information, and ensure records remain current and accurate.

Enhance the Legal department’s control environment to align with organizational objectives.

Strong interpersonal and cross-functional communication skills are essential to ensure all stakeholders remain updated and to collaboratively resolve shared challenges.

Required to demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to inspire and guide teams toward achieving organizational goals. Must exhibit effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Expected to mentor and develop team members, ensuring alignment with company values and strategic objectives. Drive the execution and realization of the Legal sub-function’s strategic initiatives and objectives in alignment with the overarching business strategy.

To develop and evaluate innovative projects and proposals that align with the organization’s strategic objectives and core values, ensuring legal functions are deeply integrated into core business operations and function as both strategic risk managers and trusted business partners.

Candidates must possess the necessary educational background, relevant professional experience, and key competencies to excel in this role. Holders of a respected law degree from an esteemed academic institution, equipped with the capability to deliver expert legal counsel to internal stakeholders.

Requires a minimum of three to four years of post-qualification legal practice.

A minimum of two to three years of experience in high-pressure legal environments is highly preferred.

Proven expertise in overseeing and coordinating litigation processes, from pre-filing through resolution, with a strong understanding of legal strategies, case management systems, and procedural requirements. Skilled in managing multiple cases simultaneously while ensuring compliance with deadlines, court rules, and ethical standards. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with attorneys, clients, and external parties to develop case strategies and achieve favorable outcomes.

Proficiency in corporate secretarial functions and governance matters, particularly with CPSK credentials, is highly advantageous.

Possesses comprehensive expertise in pertinent local substantive and procedural laws, including Commercial Law, labor regulations, land-related statutes, factory and manufacturing compliance standards, as well as environmental, health, and safety (EHS) legislation.

Proven expertise in negotiation alongside exceptional written and verbal communication abilities is essential.

Proven capability to leverage strategic thinking, analytical prowess, and sound judgment in decision-making processes.

Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities, effectively guiding teams while collaborating seamlessly with peers and senior leadership. Exhibits independent decision-making skills and proactively drives initiatives forward.
