The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada started missionary outreach ministries in East Africa after the beginning of the 20th Century. In Kenya, their evangelistic work begun in the Western region and as many people were won to Christ, the African leaders and pastors begun to make appeals for a prin… read moreting press where they could print portions of the Bible, song books, tracts, Sunday school materials and other literature to meet the spiritual needs of their fast growing congregations. So, in 1952, after two years of fundraising, Evangel Press was born. It was housed in an old renovated school building in Kisumu. The name Evangel was derived from a Greek word meaning ‘Proclamation of the Gospel’
In 1963, Evangel Press was already printing in twenty-six languages in many parts of Africa, creating a distribution challenge. It was realized that to be more effective, a department of Evangel would have to deal solely with distribution. Two divisions were then created, Evangel to do printing and production while Evangel Publishing House was to be in charge of pre press work and distribution.
In 1976, Evangel Press and Evangel Publishing House were consolidated under one name, i.e. Evangel Publishing House. In 1979, Evangel Publishing House relocated from Kisumu to Nairobi’s Lumumba Drive, off Thika Road where they still have their offices to this day.
