CHAI Kenya is seeking a skilled technical expert to strengthen the WEAPON project team by providing support in the implementation of medical liquid oxygen systems. This role will involve overseeing the construction of concrete plinths, as well as the installation and commissioning of cryogenic bulk liquid oxygen storage tanks across selected healthcare facilities in Kenya. The selected facilities are at different stages of project implementation, requiring adaptable and hands-on technical oversight.

The Technical Assistant will undertake a range of duties, including, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Examine and interpret site layouts and engineering drawings pertaining to cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) installations.
Collaborate with the installation contractor and facility management to establish and confirm delivery and installation schedules.
Conduct thorough evaluations of risk assessments associated with installation procedures and verify adherence to established compliance standards.
Ensure compliance with the CGA code of practice CP 36 standards specifically pertaining to the storage of cryogenic liquids at user facilities.

Commissioning and handover processes involve a series of structured activities to ensure systems, equipment, or facilities are fully operational, compliant, and ready for transfer to the end user. This includes verifying performance against specifications, conducting functional tests, and addressing any deficiencies to meet operational readiness standards. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and collaboration with stakeholders to finalize documentation, training, and support arrangements before the final transfer of responsibility.
Support the commissioning process by participating in essential activities such as the initial filling, leak testing, pressure testing, and functional verification of the LOX system.
Monitor system performance to ensure compliance with established parameters, including flow rates, delivery pressures, and purity levels.
Deliver in-person training sessions for facility personnel, covering safe operation protocols, monitoring techniques, and emergency response procedures for cryogenic LOX systems.
Compile comprehensive handover documentation, comprising operations and maintenance manuals, in a formal format.
Verify that all safety and hazard signage is properly installed and maintained in designated areas.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required. A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in software development, system administration, or a closely related role is essential. Proficiency in programming languages including but not limited to Python, Java, or C++ is necessary. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset are critical for success in this position. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are also required to effectively interact with team members and stakeholders.

Proven expertise in the hands-on installation of cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) storage tanks, encompassing site preparation, secure tank placement, anchoring procedures, and integration with vaporizer and pipeline systems.
Experienced in constructing and installing medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS) within healthcare environments, encompassing copper piping, zone valve boxes, area alarm panels, and terminal unit outlets.
Proficiency in pressure testing, leak detection, and commissioning procedures for cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) systems and medical gas pipelines is essential.
Proven expertise in structural load calculations and adherence to foundation design specifications for large cryogenic vessels is required.
