Finance and Operations Manager

JOB PURPOSE

The Finance and Operations Manager is the guardian of AI Kenya’s financial health. By ensuring responsible financial and administrative management and compliance, the position contributes to our overall ambition and human rights impact. The position leads on budget management, internal financial controls, assets management, financial reporting, and accountability to staff, board, Amnesty International Secretariat, external individual and institutional donors, and all statutory agencies.

AI Kenya aspires to have an annual budget of KES 500 million with 20 per cent of AI Kenya revenue generated by individual giving, assets, and investments by 2028 that will resource the work of our circles of conscience, partners and secretariat. As a key member of our staff, you will be required to actively demonstrate and deliver this vision as well as uphold values of integrity, inclusion, courageous solidarity, and innovative creativity. You will be familiar with rights-based organising, citizen empowerment and an anti-discriminatory approach to social justice. You will be required to work and lead teams, multi-task and work to deadlines, sometimes under pressure.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage the finance and administrative team ensuring overall team effectiveness and performance.
Efficiently and accurately oversee the financial management system with reporting as required for internal and external accountability.
Manage the full spectrum of finance and administrative operations including budgeting and forecasting, cash-flows and management accounts, auditing, office workplace, payroll management, assets management, and information systems.
To manage financial reporting in a manner that can attract considerable number of givers, supporters and members and partnerships that can finance human rights work in Kenya.
Provide thought-leadership to value for money strategies, financial management and reporting and overall fiscal transparency and integrity within Amnesty and with our partners.

As the Finance and Operations Manager, you will lead the Finance and Administration team to achieve the following;

Strategic budgeting, financial analysis and risk management controls: You will create and monitor organisational budgets and provide long-term financial insights to support strategic decision-making and effective budget management by all staff. This will involve analysing financial data trends, sound forecasting and financial decisions. You will establish where necessary and monitor internal controls to minimize financial risks and oversee external audits.
Grants, Gifts and Investments Management:  You will oversee the grants and giving management system, review grant proposals and budgets, ensure compliance with partner regulations as well as oversee AI Kenya investments and assets. You will champion innovative financial management systems that accurately capture and report revenue generated from membership, individual gifts, legacies and the sale of Amnesty merchandise, goods and services.
Financial Oversight, recordkeeping, and reporting: You will ensure accurate and up-to-date financial records, including book-keeping, payroll and other expense tracking, and managing funds. You will oversee month and year-end closing, bank reconciliations and supervise accounting staff. You will ensure financial reports are punctually and accurately prepared for internal (board, staff) and external stakeholders (funding partners, individual givers, and the Government) in line with our agreements and Government regulations.
Operational and Workplace Efficiency and Safety: You will ensure AI Kenya administrative and informational technology systems remain effective and in line with Amnesty international standards for staff safety and wellbeing, cyber-security and procurement and ensure efficiencies are introduced to reduce costs, increase value for money, integrity and significant human rights impact.

ESSENTIAL

A Masters in Commerce, Finance, Business Administration or equivalent.
A professional qualification in Accounting (CPA (K), ACCA or equivalent qualification)
Full member in good standing with ICPAK and not under any investigation for professional misconduct.
Over 5 year’s professional experience in a medium size international organization at a senior level and the ability to manage organizational finances of over KES 200 million annually.
Knowledgeable of financial management best practises, statutory law and NGO compliance standards.
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff and financial resources.
Demonstrated experience of working with bilateral agencies, trust and foundations, statutory bodies and audit firms.
Remarkable commercial acumen and strategic business knowledge and excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to persuade and influence others.
Familiarity with simultaneously managing significant revenues from diverse funding streams that may include institutional funding, social enterprise, endowment fund, investments, individual giving, and asset management approaches.

DESIRABLE

Diploma in Procurement, information technology or equivalent.
Demonstrated understanding of financial training and capacity-building for non-finance managers.
Familiarity with the rights-based approach, citizen empowerment and gender sensitive approaches.
Demonstrated leader in their community, accounting profession or any other constituency.
