Research and Development Agronomist

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Research and Development Agronomist will conduct research and field checks, take samples and make observations, perform tests, and identify and solve problems related to plant or soil nutrition, damage from insects or wildlife, weather or climate changes, or the use of specialized products, such as pesticides, fertilizers, etc. Using this information, you will also help farmers develop techniques to increase crop quality and yield.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Undertaking tea agronomic experiments/trials to solve agronomic challenges in operations and innovate novel growing processes 
Liaise with national research institutes in acquisition and domestication of novel agronomic techniques to improve efficiencies in tea growing.
Undertake continuous refinement of harvesting and field maintenance techniques to improve crop yields and quality
Coordinate tea nutrition activities in the plantation
Research and recommend practical and cost-effective farm practices to mitigate effects of climate and weather changes to build resilience in operations.
Research and recommend cost effective and environmentally friendly systems to control pest and diseases in tea.
Visit fields to collect seed, plant tissue, and soil samples for experimental and diagnostic use.
Assisting with the plant selection process and the development of planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
Obtaining and maintaining detailed records regarding field productivity, crop varieties, and diary of field activities.
Promoting best practice techniques through educational presentations to aid in decision making.
Preparing and managing plans for crop improvement and enhanced production
Designing and coordinating land development projects for agricultural land and forests.
Production and green space management (agricultural, forests and urban environments).
Safeguarding environmental sustainability and coordinate environmental certification activities within the plantation.
Carrying out land-use planning as is applicable within the plantation.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED 

Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field.
A Post graduate training in Agronomy, Soil Science or relevant research experience in Agronomy.
Professional knowledge in tea agronomy and breeding. 
Strong research and statistical skills, 
Critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office and scientific data analytical software.
Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments.
