Job Summary
The main purpose of this position is to:
Gather data from the field offices and open sources, enter the data into a database and prepare it for inclusion in INSO daily reports
Prepare reports on specific issues and themes, as requested by the unit’s head.
Major Responsibilities:

Data Gathering and Analysis:
Process, edit and analyse complex information for the production of security reports
Liaise with field officers in Somalia for confirmation and verification of reports
Ensure information collected is cross-checked, credible and timely
Follow up events and prepare statistical reports whenever required
Pro-actively collect information relevant to NGOs safety and security. Monitor all major Somalia news websites to capture all security incidents which will affect NGOs directly or indirectly
Report immediately any security incident concerning NGOs or other breaking news.
Reporting:
Prepare the daily reports, in coordination with the other team members and under the direction of the line manager
Under direction of the line manager, support other team members in the preparation of bi-weekly reports, quarterly reports, special reports, area briefs, maps, advisories and field assessments
Proof-read reports, and ensure that reports are of high quality and compliant with INSO standards both in terms of content, style and formatting
Ensure a high confidentiality of requests and reports.
Management of the Database:
Support the information assistant on tasks related to data entry, data extraction and maintenance of INSO incidents database, including (but not limited to):
Entering into INSO database all the incidents mentioned in the INSO daily reports
Ensuring quality tagging of all the incidents
Upon request of the line manager, extracting from the database lists of incidents and/or statistics for specific locations, timeframes and/or types of incidents
Monitoring and reporting on the state of data entry and potential database bugs.
Others:
As a member of the Research and Analysis team, when required, the Analyst will support the other team members in their daily tasks, upon request from his/her line manager. This includes – but is not limited to:
Participate upon request in the briefing and training of NGOs in link with the Training Manager Participate in field trips/assessments.
Requirements:
Candidates having a strong research and/or journalistic background, demonstrated analytical skills, and experience specific to Somalia are invited to apply.
Five years of work experience are required, preferably in positions requiring high level information sourcing, processing, analysis and writing.
A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Political Sciences, History, Anthropology or other Social Sciences or English literature is strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to source, analyse and process information
Precision, ability to not make any mistakes while entering data
Demonstrated ability to author well-structured, well-researched and analytically sound reports.
Languages: English (working language): fluent with excellent writing capacities, Somali (working language): mother tongue
Proven strong writing skills and good command of English
Computer skills: familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Earth.
Previous experience with NGOs or UN humanitarian agencies is an advantage.
Characteristics:
This position is based in Nairobi, with some travel to the field
The position requires the holder to be able to work effectively and efficiently unsupervised.
The selected candidate must be able to plan and manage their own time effectively.
The holder must exercise a strong work ethic and take responsibility for his/her own actions
This position requires a degree of flexibility with respect to working hours.
