Chief Accountant

The position holder will have an overall responsibility of supervising and monitoring the activities of accounting, reporting and the reconciliation functions of the department as well as to oversee financial reporting in accordance with International Accounting standards and will report to the Secretary/CEO.
Key responsibilities:

Keeping proper accounts records of the Law Society of Kenya and Advocates Benevolent Association.
Oversees and directs specific accounting activities, including General Ledger, Accounts Receivable/Billing, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Period End/Year End closing, and financial reporting.
Prescribes adequate systems of internal control to ensure accuracy and adequacy of accounting records and documentation, including appropriate procedures, manuals, and standard practice instructions
Manages accounts staff and periodically reviews general ledger entries, to check accuracy and compliance with the established rules and accounting principles and that all entries are supported with valid documentation
Implementing effective financial management policies, procedures, practices, processes and systems as approved by the Council;
Oversees the formulation, preparation, monitoring and presentation of actual and budgeted figures in accordance with the set objectives, targets and plans;
Coordinating and monitoring the Society’s investment of surplus funds, management of the cash flows and operational expenditures and designing measures to correct anomalies;
Ensures that all operations within functions are completed accurately and in a timely manner
Supervises the preparation of monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements in co-ordination with other departments that is consistent with International Accounting Standards and advise the CEO and the Council of possible solutions and way forward
Manages month-end closing, including review of general ledger entries, preparing accruals, and other closing journals as deemed necessary
Interacts with auditors and participates in year-end audit by providing documents and materials as required;
Ensure Society’s compliance with the tax obligations as stipulated in the income tax act and other statutory legislations
Managing office administrational duties;
Any other related duties as may be assigned by the Secretary/CEO;

Required skills and experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from a recognized university
Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience in financial & management accounting, 2 of which must be in a senior position.
Must be a CPA-K and in good standing
Excellent strategic planning skills.
MUST possess strong leadership skills.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
