Head of Programmes – Renewable Energy and Climate Technologies (REACT)

Key responsibilities:
Strategy

Lead AECF’s strategic efforts for the clean energy sector and develop an innovative and ambitious energy sector strategy with a clear focus on sub-sector interventions across Sub-Saharan Africa to scale up clean energy SMEs and increase access to finance.
Champion new opportunities across the organization, working collaboratively to identify opportunities in the energy-agribusiness nexus, remove key barriers and enable innovation to build sustainable businesses.
Oversee the implementation (time, budget and deliverables) of the clean energy strategy, putting in place tools,
processes and systems to ensure the realization of the strategic objectives.
Closely collaborate with and support the CEO to amplify executive efforts and function as a thought partner, switching effectively between strategic and tactical priorities.
Lead the integration of AECF’s thematic areas of focus – especially climate – into the energy strategy and ensure delivery of impact in all AECF’s thematic areas (youth, gender and fragility).

Program Implementation and Execution

Oversee programme implementation, ensuring consistent and quality delivery.
Ensure exceptional management of current programme portfolio, and lead portfolio expansion – providing guidance
and direction to the portfolio team on competitions, due diligence, structuring, and execution of programme activities.
Provide technical expertise to assure alignment of the clean energy portfolio with evolving sector development
policies, government development objectives, other donor programmes, and foreign policy priorities.
Provide oversight to the planning and execution of portfolio activities to ensure that: implementation is on
track; performance targets are being met; progress reporting is timely and accurate, and resources are
utilised appropriately.
Lead regional and country operations, overseeing the composition and strengthening of the capabilities of the
team.

Partnership Development

Maximize mobilization of funds (public and private sector donors, including bilateral, multilateral, and foundation donors) and bring co-financier resources to support existing and new programmes/products.
Lead origination, concept note and proposal development towards ensuring the diversification of AECF programmes and product portfolio.
Working with the partnerships team, identify and onboard partners that may accelerate investment,
innovation and market access across regions, countries, and sub-sectors.
Manage relationships with main donors and partners at a global and country-level.

Suitable candidates should:

Hold a Graduate/Master’s qualification in Engineering, Business Administration, Economics, Development Studies, Sustainable Energy, Resource Economics, or any other relevant field of study.
Possess a minimum of ten (10) years of experience and recognised expertise in renewable energy, climate change, climate financing and renewable energy financing.
Have In-depth knowledge of clean energy solutions, including key trends, markets and innovative business and finance models – and an understanding of de-risking investments and appraisal of impact-focused business models.
Have more than five years of experience in the financing of early and growth stage clean energy SMEs in sub-Sahara Africa.
Possess the ability to develop effective strategies based on analysis of challenges, potential risks, and opportunities, linking the vision to reality, and creating tangible solutions.
Possess proven programme management skills with the ability to manage multiple programmes and multiple workstreams at the same time.
Have proven experience working in the development sector, managing multiple donor/ funder engagements.
Have a good understanding of rural and/or financial services markets in Africa as relates energy sector.
Possess excellent analytical and communication skills with the ability to prepare proposals, reports, and concept papers to a high level of proficiency.
Be an excellent and visionary leader with great interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, impeccable integrity, and good judgment.
Possess exceptional planning and analytical skills, an ability to discern patterns and insights from research and internal / external data and focus on the critical business issues.
Possess a high degree of initiative and energy, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.
