Our client, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited (“Kenya Power”) is a well-established State Corporation and a recognized leader in electricity distribution and retail in East Africa. Kenya Power is a limited liability company incorporated under the Companies Act, Cap 486, Laws of Kenya and is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. The Company’s key mandate is to purchase bulk electricity from various producers, and to supply, transmit, distribute and retail it to end-user customers throughout the Republic of Kenya. Kenya Power as a leading player in the energy sector, is at the forefront of spearheading accomplishment of Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals and is critical to the social and economic development of Kenya.
As Kenya Power celebrates its centenary it is seeking to recruit an exceptional, visionary and results oriented leader with strong commitment to Kenya Power’s core values of customers first, team work, passion about powering the nation, integrity, striving for excellence, accountable to customers and stakeholders to fill the role of the Managing Director.
The Managing Director will lead a large, complex operation overseeing the development and execution of ambitious and high impact strategic and operational plans and service delivery. You will spearhead the drive to improve operational efficiency and service delivery by ensuring efficient and seamless operations.

As the Managing Director, you will draw on your experience of leading and coaching senior leaders to build alignment and commitment and deliver results. As someone who thrives in a results oriented and high-growth environment, you will be highly experienced, agile , and resourceful. You will bring a cross-sectoral perspective and experience in order to lead a high-performing technical and commercial team and a strong passion for excellence and service delivery. The Managing Director will also provide leadership for all aspects of the company’s operations with emphasis on long-term goals, growth and, profitability of the Company.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Provide strategic direction and leadership in line with the corporate business plan and strategy;
Establish Kenya Power’s position as a global partner of choice for customers, high quality suppliers, funders and other stakeholders;
Establish annual operating budgets, with effective internal monitoring and control systems;
Provide strategic direction on opportunities for new utility investment ventures & collaborations;
Ensure that investments and procurement in the company are of the highest quality and take advantage of global value and supply chains;
Ensure continuous achievement of financial and operating goals and quality services to customers;
Manage relationships and maintain business networks with local and global stakeholders;
Direct and coordinate Company operations in line with the set strategic goals and performance targets;
Proactively identify and manage principal financial and investment risks likely to affect the organisation;
Coach, mentor, and develop the executive team for performance and effective succession planning;
Foster a culture that promotes strong ethical practices, good governance and employee productivity;
Oversee operations, supervision, management of performance and development of Kenya Power staff; and
Ensure effective Human Resource management across all functions and operations of Kenya Power.

Requirements

Be a holder of a university degree in any of the following fields: Engineering, Technology, Science, Business or related Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field, from an accredited/recognized institution. A Master’s degree and/or professional qualification in related field will be an added advantage;
Have at least ten (10) years’ experience in Power, Utilities & Renewables sector, with not less than five (5) years served as Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer or 10 years as C -suite executive responsible for at least three function areas of an energy utility company. Work experience in more than one utility will be a definite added advantage;
Have experience in distributing electricity, liaising with clients, engaging in business development, managing operations, and working with local and global stakeholders;
Possess demonstrated exceptional management skills, including program design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation and promoting innovation;
Must have excellent people skills, a history of demonstrated leadership and the ability to work effectively with the board;
Have significant experience in successfully leading high impact projects and high calibre multi-disciplinary teams in complex environments;
Should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and success in influencing and communicating with diverse audiences, governments, and donors at the national, regional and international level;
Have ability to think strategically while promoting cohesion and team building and maintaining strong morale among the staff is paramount; and
Be a discernible change catalyst with ability to transform a power utility from ‘’Good’’ to “Great”.
