Legal and Risk Management Coordinator

Major Functions:
 
This position will be responsible for providing high quality legal advice to WWF-Kenya on a wide range of legal and risk related issues; conservation policy and advocacy; supporting the Head of Audit, Risk and Compliance in updating and implementing the risk management policy and framework, coordinating risk management and internal control activities; and regular risk reporting.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Legal and Compliance

Provide effective and efficient in-house legal support to WWF-Kenya’s programmatic and operational work including compliance with statutory requirements. Develop and manage the implementation of appropriate strategies, work plans to ensure legal compliance and advice on legal issues related to the conservation programme policy and legislation.
Provide legal advice on a wide range of legal matters and contractual agreements in order to ensure that any risks and consequences are mitigated and WWF-Kenya complies with applicable WWF standards, laws and regulations.
Review existing agreement templates and clauses therein for compliance with relevant WWF network Standards and applicable laws and regulations.
Review all new and existing policies and advice on legal implications of internal policies and procedures.
Review ongoing cases and advice management accordingly.
Assist with litigation management of new and outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
Defend and protect WWF-Kenya’s interests.
Advise on institutional matters, including governance, grievances process, investigations as well as human resource related matters. 
Any other relevant tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Risk Management

Coordinate and facilitate risk assessments with programme and operational units, document these risks and appropriate risk mitigation actions, responsibilities and timelines. Champion the identification of root causes of risks, and propose mitigating measures with a focus on prevention.
Facilitate, monitor and report on the implementation of agreed mitigation actions.
Develop and implement procedures to collect relevant data and efficiently track and report specific issues, trends and cross-cutting matters representing a high risk to WWF-Kenya.
Train WWF-Kenya staff and partners in order to raise their awareness and increase their capacity in risk management, and to strengthen the culture of integrity and accountability.
Promote and disseminate the enterprise risk management framework.
Provide regular updates on matters related to risk, compliance and quality, including on emerging risks and opportunities.
Analyse risk management, compliance, and oversight findings and recommendations; and identify lessons learnt and root cause of recurring systemic issues within WWF-Kenya. Prepare reports on significant matters that require management action or intervention; or changes to organizational policies and procedures.
Ensure risk management, ethical and integrity considerations are integrated into the organizational processes.
Provide risk management and compliance content for inclusion in the annual report.
Participate in the development of the organizational business continuity plan.

Profile: 
Required Qualifications
Minimum qualification:

Bachelor of Laws Degree
Advocate of the High Court
At least three years post admission experience.
Certification in Enterprise Risk Management and demonstrated experience in practice including risk management in Kenya.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience with laws dealing with commercial/contract administration and labour laws.
Understanding of environmental and NGO legislation would be beneficial.
Strong experience in drafting and negotiating contracts.

Demonstrable ability and experience in the implementation of risk management mitigation strategies at all levels of the organization.
Ability to handle potentially difficult situations in a professional, tactful and confidential manner.
Able to work independently as well as work effectively as a member of a team to meet set deadlines.
Systematic and analytical thinker.
Able to solve problems and build relationships.
Strong writing and presentation skills.

Working Relationships:
 
Internal –Interacts with the WWF-Kenya Management, Heads of Departments and all staff at all levels in all locations.
 
External – Interacts with legal and risk management service providers, implementing partners, network risk management community, regulatory bodies and other conservation organizations.
