Principal Scientist – Livestock Modelling/Policy

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Principal Scientist – Livestock Modelling/Policy to provide global leadership in the area of livestock modelling, policy, and foresight analysis. The job holder will coordinate the development and implementation of National Livestock Master Plans, spearheads innovations in ex ante impact assessment methods, mobilizes resources for large strategic institute initiatives, and liaises with national and international partners to advance research on the contributions of livestock to economic development and livelihoods.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate the development, resourcing, and implementation of National Livestock Master Plans with national and international partners, liaising with stakeholders and donors to produce high-quality outputs that support investment options in the livestock sector;
Lead the conceptual development and resource mobilization efforts of innovative analytical frameworks and methodological tools to study the performance of and develop options for livestock product markets, value chains, and trade regimes, as well as regulatory and investment policy for livestock development;
Contribute to the livestock global foresight analysis program, linking to foresight work with CGIAR partners, and other organizations on methodological developments  and participating in global forums and compendia of foresight research;
Collaborate with other colleagues to integrate various disciplines and cross-cutting issues (e.g. gender equity, environmental sustainability) into the modelling and foresight work;
Lead a geographically dispersed international team of economists, and modelers addressing a range of dimensions of research on livestock policies and investments
Build collaborations with relevant institutions and organizations internationally and nationally
Represent ILRI in key international fora on livestock policy, value chains, trade, and modelling, and raise awareness of the importance of livestock value chain development and policy.

Requirements

A relevant PhD qualification involving applied empirical modelling of natural systems, including agricultural/livestock economics, system dynamics, or geography, with a minimum of 10 years of experience post-PhD;
A proven research record reflecting experience in research design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and producing peer-reviewed outputs;
Experience in managing a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team of researchers and development practitioners, and in the associated human resource and financial management;
Strong econometric and/or mathematical modeling skills, and the ability to apply them in pro-poor development research; 
Demonstrated ability to deliver multi-disciplinary research outputs and to initiate and manage cross-disciplinary research activities;
Familiarity with aspects of livestock production and marketing, crop-livestock systems, and rural market institutions and services in developing countries;
Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage);
Willingness and ability to travel frequently, sometimes to rural areas in developing countries

Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
