Technical Assistant II

Responsibilities
1. Colony Management and Research Animal Supply

Coordinate and manage the animal colonies and study animal observations
Assist in the selection of animals for studies
Coordinate blood and tissue sampling, blood screening, endoparasite screening and external parasite screening and control
Coordinate and control correct feeding instructions of colony animals
Control and manage routine body condition scoring
Coordinate, prepare and delegate pre-study animal selection and clinical examinations of animals
Capture raw data and maintain animal data and histories
Post study animal husbandry
Ensure correct movement and allocation of colony animals
Perform any other related duties as may be required

 
2. Veterinary Support

Provide therapy (on prescription) and care of animals to ensure good animal health and wellbeing
Provide clinical assistance to Veterinarians during surgery and procedures and general nursing responsibilities
Perform activities involving either the termination of animals and/or handling animals found dead or moribund in accordance to internal standards
Conduct relevant observations, examinations, analysis and procedures
Perform activities and practices involving the quarantine and/or isolation of animals
Handle and store scheduled/unscheduled drugs in an efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable manner
Handle and store chemicals and laboratory consumables in an efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable manner
Perform any other related duties as may be required

3. Research support (Facility & Study operation)

Assist with research support activities from time to time
Record and handle raw data to ensure accurate and consistent information for departmental and study use
Verify, monitor and control environmental monitoring devices (temperature; Humidity and water quality) and relevant equipment to ensure a correct controlled climate and safe water quality for animal consumption and use
Receive, inspect, store and dispense animal feeds
Maintain a contaminant free facility to optimise animal health and wellbeing by ensuring a clean, orderly and audit ready facility
Perform any other related duties as may be required

4. Compliance

Interact and handle animals by following set instructions and procedures to ensure content, well-adjusted and cared for animals housed in the correct appointed facilities
Promote principals of either preventing the onset of animal diseases and or controlling the escalation of animal disease ensuring good animal health and wellbeing by following procedures
Follow set instructions and procedures to prevent contamination, maintain and optimise animal health and wellbeing and maintain a clean, orderly and audit ready facility at all times
Observe the correct reporting, remedial and corrective actions to be followed by following set instructions and procedures to report and correct any non-conformance issues
Adhere to specified internal and external compliance and legislative standards, requirements and practices
Observe the workplace rules at all times and report non-conformance to the relevant person as to ensure that all activities in the workplace are compliant with company rules, policies and procedures
Identify and implement preventative measures in accordance with set instructions and procedures in cases where serious diseases are suspected
Perform any other related duties as may be required

Requirements

Kenya certificate of secondary education
One-year relevant experience
Technical training
Be registered with the Kenya Veterinary Board
Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment
Knowledge of VICH, GCP and GLP

Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya
Terms of Appointment
This position is at job level HG 8 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances
