Senior BOP Marketing specialist Kenya 2Scale

For Bopinc’s consumer marketing activities in 2SCALE in Kenya we are looking to expand our team with a Senior BoP Marketing Specialist, based in Nairobi.

ABOUT THE JOB

The 2SCALE program, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, is one of the most innovative incubator programs for inclusive agribusiness in sub-Saharan Africa.

2SCALE implements a portfolio of partnerships in eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Niger and Nigeria). 

These partnerships aim to promote inclusive business in agriculture, through support to value chain development, agribusiness cluster formation and enabling business environments. The program partners with national and multinational agri-food companies as drivers to increase smallholder farmer productivity and efficiency within selected value chains. Specific attention is given to job creation (including for youth), women entrepreneurship and low-income consumers and producers. 

Roles & responsibilities

Lead the implementation of BoP consumer marketing activities with local SMEs and farmer organizations in Kenya. These could include but are not limited to:
Organize BoP consumer insights research, interpret insights and translate into advise to businesses and other relevant stakeholders
Implement strategy workshop(s) with SMEs and relevant stakeholders to develop marketing & distribution strategies
Develop related action plans and budgets for implementation
Build overall capacities of participating SME (technical, organizational) through business model canvas workshops and design/ implement follow-up activities, including empowerment programs
Monitor (immediate, intermediate) results of the BoP marketing interventions and Provide regular, monthly reports on the progress and the impact of the activities
In close cooperation with the communication team, you will draft communication materials (blogs, news articles) on interesting lessons/experiences derived from the marketing pilots
Provide “thought leadership” on BoP Marketing & Distribution in target value chains and (related) agri-food industries
Coach and advise junior colleagues in other countries on the adoption and use of BoP marketing and distribution principles and practices.
Lead the facilitation of one of the 2SCALE partnerships in Kenya. For this we expect you to:

Coordinate field interventions that fall    under 2SCALE’s responsibility, in line with set targets, and in close collaboration with supporting 2SCALE cross-cutting specialists. These activities may include but not be limited to the following:
Mobilize actors around target agribusiness clusters and value chains.
Coordinate of activities of connected local actors within agribusiness clusters, based on competitive strategies.
Facilitate capacity building (technical, organizational) and empowerment programs.
Promote innovations within agribusiness clusters and value chains.
Roll-out capacity and trust building activities to improve efficiency and reduce transaction costs within value chains.
Link value chain actors to financial and other support services.
Monitor and document the progress of the PPPs in line with PPP key performance indicators
Develop PPP action plans and cost-shared budgets.

Qualifications & requirements

At least a bachelor degree in Marketing or Business Administration. Candidates with a background in International Development or Development Economics could also qualify if they can prove work experience in marketing.
8-10 years of work experience, preferably in a consumer marketing position with a larger company, or in a marketing position with a private-sector focused NGO.
A sound, general understanding of the agribusiness sector in Kenya.Experience in developing rural sales networks, distribution channels and how products in the rural areas can thrive.
Experience in developing and managing marketing strategies of emerging BoP products.
Enthusiastic, goal-oriented person able to work independently on own tasks.
Comfortably fitting in with young, small and international team based in several continents.
Native English writing and verbal communication skills, good command of at least 1 local language is a plus.
Willingness to travel frequently for short-term project assignments around Kenya and occasionally international travels for team meetings.
